After being mocked by Maxwell, Evelyn burned with rage. She approached him, whispered coldly in his ear, “My dear brother, do you really think Aurora will spare you in the end? I’ve lost, but you won’t win either!”

Maxwell looked at her with a complex expression, then walked away with a glass of champagne towards the dance hall.

This family had always been like this full of scheming, including his once–beloved sister, now revealing her sharp claws.

The ball had just begun, mainly an affair for the younger guests. The grandfather was tired and had been escorted back to rest by Leen.

Aurora found a corner and sat down with Vespera to enjoy some pastries.

“Aurora, how did you get that frame?” Vespera asked curiously.

Aurora shook her head, “I don’t know, it wasn’t me. I have no idea where Jay got it from.”

Vespera’s curiosity piqued further. “Should we ask Jay then?”

Aurora, seeing the spark of curiosity in Vespera’s eyes, nodded reluctantly, “Alright.”

As she stood up to find Jay, Vespera lagged a couple of steps behind and was intercepted by Alaric, who pulled her towards the dance floor.

“Alaric? Vespera looked surprised, unexpectedly pulled into a dance.

“Dance with me,” Alaric said, leading her into the dance.

Vespera felt a flash of annoyance. She wasn’t close enough to Alaric for him to assume she’d comply with his whims.

She responded coolly, “you seem to have forgotten, I don’t dance.”

As she turned to leave, Alaric gently held her waist and pulled her closer, his voice carrying a hint of pleading, “Stay, just for one dance.”

Vespera felt the gentle grip on her waist, his touch soft yet insistent. She looked up into Alaric’s imploring eyes. He seemed determined to dance with her.

A sudden impulse made her glance over the crowd, where she spotted Elowen glaring angrily in their direction, watching Alaric dance

with her.

Vespera’s mood lifted. She placed her hand lightly on Alaric’s shoulder and asked, “For Elowen?”

Alaric gave a wry smile, “You must think I’m ridiculous, don’t you?”

Elowen had come to the dinner, probably because Heath was supposed to attend but got held up on a business trip. Without her intended target, she noticed Alaric, who had been lingering behind her for a while.

When Elowen turned towards him with a smile, Alaric knew that if he approached her to dance, she would surely accept.

But suddenly, he found the idea tedious. Almost avoiding Elowen’s gaze, he turned and saw Vespera getting up.

In the vast sea of people, Alaric saw Vespera as the only one who could save him from looking like a soldier in retreat.

So, he desperately clung to Vespera, pleading with her to accompany him through the dance.

Vespera looked into Alaric’s eyes, noting the hint of a helpless smile on his lips. She shook her head, “No, it’s not ridiculous.”

Alaric looked down at her, “How is it not ridiculous?”

She smiled, “There’s nothing laughable about liking someone.”

Alaric suddenly smiled, “Thank you.”

Vespera, with a mischievous smile, rested her hand on his shoulder, “I did it for Aurora, just to irritate Elowen a bit.”

As the dance ended, Alaric released Vespera’s hand and asked, “Your hand…”

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it,” Vespera assured him.

“Let me take you to change your dressing tomorrow,” Alaric suggested.

He knew she had to visit Lysander daily for her treatment and wanted to make it up to her in some way.

Vespera paused, then shook her head, “No need, I can go by myself.”

“I’ll take you!” Alaric insisted firmly.

Alaric… Vespera started to refuse.

Alaric cut her off, “That’s settled then! I’ll pick you up tomorrow!”

Vespera looked at him helplessly, and with no sign of retreat from Alaric, she agreed, “Okay, then.”

Alaric’s face lit up with joy. As Vespera turned to head back to the resting area, she paused, turned back, and said, “You know, sometimes it’s ridiculous not because you like someone, but because you see their flaws clearly and still refuse to let go.”

With that, Vespera returned to the resting area. Aurora had run off somewhere to find Jay, leaving Vespera to wait there.

Alaric watched Vespera’s retreating figure, lost in thought for a long time.

Is that how it is?

He had seen Elowen’s true colors, yet he still couldn’t let go. Was this why he looked so ridiculous?

Aurora had run to the garden and found Jay sitting there, eating. She ran up to him, lifting her dress, and tapped him on the shoulder, “Explain?”

Jay didn’t even look at her, “Explain what?”

“The gift? Where did you get it?‘ Aurora demanded.

Jay shrugged. It wasn’t me. It was given to me by someone else.”

“Who gave it to you?‘ Aurora was stunned.

“Kietan, Jay said.

Aurora was dumbfounded. Kieran? Did that mean it was from Heath? Had Heath prepared a birthday gift for her?

Jay looked at Aurora as if she were clueless, “Don’t you get it? Heath obviously knew you forgot about the birthday gift. He had Kieran deliver something to me, to save your day!”

A sweet feeling spread in Aurora’s heart. So, Heath had thought of everything for her?

He knew she might make such a mistake, so he prepared such a significant gift, ready to support her at any moment?

For the first time, Aurora felt the comfort of being a regular girl who makes mistakes and creates trouble, waiting for that someone to solve them, to think of every exit strategy. It felt good.

It was like even if the sky were falling, there would be that stalwart man, ready to hold up a patch of sunlight for her.
