At the hospital.
Aurora stood vigil outside the emergency room. Suddenly, the lights above flickered off, prompting Aurora to leap to her feet, a wave of dizziness washing over her. She steadied herself and rushed to the emergency room entrance.
As Lysander emerged, Aurora besieged him with questions, ‘How is he? How’s my grandpa?”
Lysander sighed, “Aurora, I’ve told you before, the last surgery was perilously close to disaster. He cannot endure even the slightest
disturbance.
“I know, it’s my fault. I didn’t take good enough care of him. How is he now?” Aurora was so anxious she was nearly ready to burst into the emergency room herself.
“He’s stabilized for now, but he’s not out of the woods yet. I’ve done everything I can; the rest is up to your grandpa’s own luck,” Lysander
spoke gravely.
To a doctor, there might be no more moves to make, but for Aurora, this felt like a death sentence for her grandfather.
Aurora watched numbly as nurses wheeled her grandfather into the intensive care unit, his body connected to a ventilator, surrounded by a myriad of machines. The robust man she knew had become so frail and weak, as if Death itself had clasped his hand.
Leen supported Aurora, trying to offer comfort, “Miss Aurora, your grandpa will be alright. He must be.”
Aurora nodded dumbly, her gaze fixed unblinkingly on the ICU, hoping against hope for her grandfather to awaken at any moment.
But as she kept her vigil through the night, there was no sign of awakening. Lysander had said there was still hope if her grandfather
could wake up.
Aurora had Leen send the lawyers away. She was ready to give up everything, all her shares, anything, as long as her grandfather would wake up. She vowed to stay by his side and never cause him any distress again.
That evening, Heath was locked in negotiations with a potential partner. Across the negotiation table, Kieran had never seen Heath like this before; he was a complete predator, seizing every advantage, giving no quarter.
Kieran couldn’t tell if Heath wanted to wrap up the deal to return sooner, or destroy it to delay his return.
After the negotiations, which stretched till ten at night, Kieran drove Heath back to his hotel. Heath sat silently in the back seat, gazing
out the window.
Kieran dared not joke as usual; Heath seemed colder, more aloof, and more distant than before.
Their accommodation was not in the city center, and as they drove out of the city, the surroundings grew desolate. Kieran sped up, but as

they rounded a corner, a van suddenly charged out, ramming hard into the back seat of Heath’s car.
The car was sent flying. Kieran, buckled in, was nearly suffocated by the airbag. Dazed, he turned to check on Heath, “Boss, are you
alright?”

Heath wasn’t in the back seat; he had been thrown against the car body. Blood streamed down his forehead, his vision darkening, yet he managed to say, “Kieran, go… get outta here!”
Kieran looked out to see several tall men emerging from the van, rushing over with metal pipes and guns, brutally smashing the windows, then dragging Heath out of the car.
Kieran struggled to free himself from the seat belt, shouting, “Boss! Boss!”
As Heath was led towards the van, surrounded by men armed with pipes and guns, he barely managed to open his blood–covered eyes to
look at Kieran, mouthing, “Go!”
Kieran finally broke free from the seatbelt and tumbled out of the car, chasing after Heath, yelling, “Boss!”
One of the gunmen turned and fired a shot. Heath’s eyes widened in shock; he struggled fiercely until a pipe brutally struck his neck,
knocking him unconscious.
Aurora jolted awake from her bed, drenched in cold sweat. She had dreamt of Heath being shot. Coming back to her senses, she reassured
herself that Heath was only away on a business trip; nothing was amiss.
Despite his promises to call Aurora as soon as he landed, the silence from him—no calls, no messages–left Aurora prone to worry.
Touching the diamond ring on her finger, she took a deep breath, convincing herself that nothing was wrong and that Heath would return
soon.
Getting out of bed, Little Fish entered the room, surprised, “Miss Aurora, you’re awake already? You were up all night; Dr. Lysander
advised you to rest here.”
Shaking her head, Aurora insisted, “I’m not tired. I want to see grandpa.”
As Little Fish set down some food, they walked toward the ICU, trying to comfort her, “Miss Aurora, don’t worry. Your grandpa will wake
up.”
Aurora nodded but quickened her pace. Approaching the ICU, she heard commotion and felt a surge of panic, rushing over.
She collided with Jay, who had been looking for her, “Aurora, your grandpa’s condition has worsened!”
Pushing past Jay, Aurora ran to the ICU. The chaos inside was palpable, with Lysander and the medical staff bustling about. Aurora barged
in, clutching her grandfather’s hand, crying out, “Grandpa! Grandpa! I’m here! Please wake up!”

Amidst the pandemonium, with nurses administering injections and shouts of dropping heart rates, her grandfather slowly opened his eyes. It seemed he immediately noticed Aurora by his bedside, managing a weak smile that highlighted the wrinkles on his face.
“Aurora… she was a good mother… The safe… you and Heath… take care of each other… ah..” He spoke haltingly, seemingly anxious.

Aurora couldn’t fully understand or process his words, focusing only on nodding fervently, “I know, I know! Grandpa, I know! Please, get
better soon!”
He smiled briefly, but then his smile faded, and his hand slipped from Aurora’s grasp, trembling. Aurora screamed, ‘Grandpa! Grandpa!”
A nurse pushed her aside, “Miss, please, step outside!”
As Aurora was moved away, Little Fish and Jay supporting her, the medical team attempted to revive her grandfather with defibrillation, fighting to bring back his heartbeat.
Then, Aurora heard the stark alarm of the heart monitor, its once erratic line going flat, snapping like a tense string.
The doctors put away their equipment, and the nurses their syringes. The previously noisy room fell silent–either that or Aurora could no
longer hear anything.
All she could see was the figure on the pristine bed, an old man with greying hair and wrinkled skin, who had just smiled at her, now
covered by a white sheet by a nurse.
