Lysander approached, embracing Aurora with a voice trembling as he said, “Aurora, I’m so sorry. Please, find peace in this time of sorrow.”
Originally motionless as if frozen, Aurora suddenly pushed Lysander with such force that he nearly stumbled.
She rushed to her grandfather’s bedside, ripping away the detested white sheet, and cried out, “Grandpa! Grandpa! Aurora is here, look at me, please wake up and see me! I’m about to get married, didn’t you want to be my witness? I’m really upset with you for just lying
there!”
Lysander and Jay attempted to console her, saying, “Aurora, please get up.”
Shrugging them off, Aurora clung to her grandfather as if he were a lifebuoy in her moment of despair. “Grandpa, please wake up. I don’t
want to be alone… Grandpa, take me home…”
Little Fish stood by, tears streaming down her face, and even Jay and Lysander, two grown men, had eyes brimming with tears. They all
knew that to Aurora, her grandfather was her only real family.
Leen, tears streaming down his face, came to lift Aurora.
Aurora turned towards Leen, his face as aged as her grandfather’s, always smiling at her with kindness, always there to guide and care for her. Now, with his eyes red from crying, he still sought to comfort her.
With a loud cry, Aurora threw herself into Leen’s arms, shouting, “I… I have no home left!”
Leen held her, patting her back gently, while Little Fish sobbed quietly. Lysander and Jay turned away to wipe their tears, only to find
Aurora had fainted.
“Doctor Lysander!” Leen called out.
Lysander rushed to check on Aurora, assuring, “Don’t worry, Aurora is just overwhelmed with grief. Let her rest.”
Jay carried Aurora back to the Pendleton villa. Little Fish and Leen hurried to attend to the grandfather’s funeral arrangements, while Lysander, unable to reach Heath, left a message before joining the others.
Once again, Aurora dreamed of Heath in peril. Struggling to wake, she found herself in darkness. Reaching for her phone, she dialed Heath, only to find it powered off. She thought, if she couldn’t reach Heath soon, it might be time to check on him herself.
Calling out for Little Fish, the door opened and light flooded in. “Miss Aurora, you’re finally awake. You’ve been unconscious for a whole day, frightening us all.”
“I was unconscious for an entire day?‘ Aurora paused, suddenly remembering her grandfather’s death. At that moment, she wished she
could die too, her heart feeling as if it had turned to ice.

As tears began to fall once again, Little Fish gently wiped them away, saying, “Miss Aurora, you can’t keep crying. Your eyes will get hurt.”
Holding a tissue, Aurora asked in a muffled voice, “Grandpa… How did the funeral go?”
Little Fish’s eyes reddened, “He had everything prepared for when his time came, so there wasn’t much to arrange. People came to pay their respects today while you were asleep. Leen didn’t want to wake you; the funeral is set for tomorrow.”
Aurora nodded, then inquired, “Has there been any word from Madeline?”
Nodding, Little Fish replied, “As soon as she heard your grandpa’s passing, Evelyn immediately returned. Maxwell was discharged from the hospital too. Madeline and your father insisted on seeing you, but Leen simply told them that your grandpa left the shares to Maxwell in
his will, leaving only the property to you, to prevent them from causing more trouble.”
Aurora nodded again, staying silent. She knew Leen was protecting her from any harsh words that might upset her from Madeline and her
ilk.
“Miss Aurora, you haven’t eaten all day. I’ll bring the food. Please, have a bite; you won’t make it through the night vigil otherwise,” Little
Fish said.
Aurora nodded, and Little Fish, pleased, hurried downstairs to fetch some bread. Aurora managed only a few bites, her appetite gone,
before she changed and descended to the hall.
The hall had been transformed into a memorial for her grandfather, arranged meticulously by Leen. His photo, spirited and lively, sat at the center. As Aurora entered, tears cascaded down her cheeks uncontrollably, as if her tear ducts had lost all restraint over the past few
days.
Wiping away her tears, Aurora knelt before the altar, paying her respects with three solemn bows. Lying there, her sobs broke through the silence. In that moment, she truly seemed like a little girl in need of love, a girl whose caring, endlessly gossiping grandfather would
never awaken again.
Before she could rise, a cold sneer sounded from behind, “Such a charade. Who are you performing for?”
Without turning, Aurora knew the voice belonged to Evelyn. The night’s vigil would bring together the grandchildren, and now was not the time for discord, not in her grandfather’s presence. She wished for him to see a united family, even in pretense.
Aurora’s silence did not quell Evelyn’s taunts. Leen had made it clear: the will left everything to Maxwell, including the 2% initially meant for Evelyn. This secured the family enterprise firmly in their grasp, leaving Aurora with nothing but empty jumps.
Once the funeral was over and the Pendleton family less scrutinized, Evelyn vowed to drive Aurora out for good.
Having been suppressed by Aurora before, Evelyn saw this as an opportunity for revenge, to belittle Aurora further.
“Aurora, all your schemes have amounted to nothing. In the end, the Pendleton estate remains ours, with no connection to you
whatsoever.”

Aurora, eyes closed, remained silent, refusing to acknowledge Evelyn’s provocation.
E’What’s with this pretense of dignity? Weren’t you the one who threatened us with death? Now, who’s outlasting whom? You’re a curse, Aurora. Everyone who’s good to you ends up in disaster. Look at your mother, the frail Vespera, and now grandpa. Who knows, your husband might not last long either…” Evelyn continued.
At this, Aurora’s eyes snapped open. She wasn’t the curse; it was Evelyn and her family who brought misfortune.
If not for Madeline’s interference, her grandfather wouldn’t have been in peril. Lysander had said he had years left, perhaps even longer.
Aurora lunged at Evelyn, pinning her to the floor, hands tight around her throat as she screamed, “Evelyn! Shut your mouth! You, your mother, your whole family are the ones who should die! You’re the real curse! It’s all because of you!”
Aurora’s eyes blazed with unprecedented fury, her gaze that of a demon returned from hell, intent on devouring her adversary whole.
Evelyn struggled for air under Aurora’s grip, desperately clawing at her, but Aurora showed no signs of relenting.
