Aurora descended the stairs to find Maxwell still sitting on the sofa, waiting for her.

She obediently walked over and sat next to him. Without lifting his head from his rapid typing, Maxwell said, “Aurora, take a look at the document next to you, I’ll talk to you once I’m done here.”

Aurora picked up the document. It was an overview of the current big players in the entertainment industry. The three giants-Skyline Media, Humanity Media, and Mammoth Media-pretty much had a monopoly on all the A-list and B-list celebrities in the country.

Evelyn used to be with Humanity Media. But working for another company had its limitations. Now that the Pendleton family was starting a subsidiary, Evelyn would be a semi-boss. Once her contract with Humanity expired next year, she’d return to the Pendleton fold.

Aurora pondered how she could carve out her own space between these three behemoths. She skimmed through profiles of current popular idols. Reading about them a hundred times wouldn’t compare to meeting them once. As for the major media outlets listed, she didn’t bother. If they could be controlled, great; if not, she’d just have to be on her guard.

Maxwell finally closed his laptop. “So, are you interested in the entertainment industry?”

Aurora nodded. “It looks promising, but I still have to go to college years later. Isn’t this a bit premature?”

Maxwell shook his head. “Many artists start getting roles in college. Once they gain some fame, they can establish themselves in the industry without too much academic pressure.”

“These companies seem hard to get into,” Aurora commented.

“Don’t you want to join your family’s company?” Maxwell asked.

“You’ve seen how Sophia is. If I join the same company, wouldn’t she just eat me alive?” Aurora retorted.

Maxwell chuckled. “If you have a company in mind, I can give you a recommendation. But making a name for yourself will be up to you.”

Aurora nodded, then asked, “Won’t the new subsidiary, Evelyn Media, lack resources since it’s not based in the capital?”

Maxwell shook his head. “The headquarters for Evelyn Media will be in the capital. Our family’s business focus will also shift there. So, don’t worry about that.”

Aurora smiled but said nothing. Every word from Maxwell’s mouth seemed to emphasize how much the family favored Evelyn and Sophia. Even the company’s future direction was tailored to their needs. Where did that leave her, the legitimate daughter of the family?

Aurora noticed another document beside her. “What’s this?”

“Aurora!” Maxwell reached to stop her, but it was too late. She had already opened it and glimpsed the words “Evelyn Media.”

Maxwell snatched the document back. “It’s nothing, just some preparations for the subsidiary.”

Aurora looked at Maxwell and smirked.

He had been willing to teach her, to share business insights, but when it came to Evelyn Media and his two precious sisters, he clammed up, afraid she’d learn even a smidgen of business secrets.

II Maxwell had never shown kindness, Aurora would have lumped him in with Madeline and her daughter Sophia, showing no mercy. But Maxwell’s intermittent help made him seem different from the rest of the family. Now, he was guarding against her like she was a thief.

People like him were the worst-first they butter you up, then they let you down hard..

Aurora’s eyes were full of mockery. “Thanks for your good intentions, big brother. I appreciate it.”

She stood up, ready to leave.

Maxwell was stung by her gaze. “Aurora, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Aurora turned to look at him, her smile brazen. “Hurt me? What makes you think you’re qualified to hurt me?”

Maxwell was at a loss for words. “Aurora…”

“Big brother, if you want to protect me, it’s best to keep your distance from me. Being in the middle won’t make you a good guy,” Aurora said, her eyes cold. She turned and went upstairs.
