Chapter 37
:
Around 5 or 6 in the evening, Madeline came home and ordered the servants to prepare dinner. The family gathered around the dining table for a meal.
For the first time in ages, Aurora joined them for dinner. Her weight loss had been going well, stabilizing around 110 pounds. Coupled with exercise, she looked incredibly slim now.
Sebastian had been swamped with work lately and often missed dinner at home. At the table were only Madeline, Maxwell, Sophia, and Aurora. Grandpa was probably dining at the old house.
During the meal, Aurora casually mentioned, “I went to the suburbs today and thought I saw mom. Was that her?”
Madeline’s face visibly tensed, and she replied sharply, “You must be mistaken. I was playing cards with some ladies. How could I be in the suburbs? Where did you see me?”
Aurora grinned and deliberately said, “In the east suburbs.”
Madeline’s face relaxed, and she said, “I’ve never been to the east suburbs.”
Aurora smiled softly, “Then I must’ve been mistaken.”
She took a few more bites and then headed upstairs.
Her gut told her something was off with Madeline. She was certain that she had seen her in the west suburbs today. By saying it was the east, Madeline had let her guard down. Definitely something fishy going on.
What was she doing sneaking off to a hotel? And telling the family she was out playing cards?
With Sebastian often away these days, even sleeping at the office sometimes, could Madeline be having an affair?
If that were the case, all Aurora had to do was spill the beans to Sebastian and Grandpa. Madeline wouldn’t last a day in the Pendleton household.
Aurora sat in her room, scheming. Madeline had been so cruel to her; kicking her out of the Pendleton house would be letting her off
easy.
Meanwhile, Heath had spent the morning in meetings at the branch office and was now reviewing documents in his own office.
Time ticked away, and the young girl who had promised to give him an IOU had vanished after taking his 3 million.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. And what about those names she was mumbling drunk yesterday? Dominic, Jasper
Bennett…
How did an 18-year-old girl know so many men?
Heath pressed the intercom, and Kieran promptly entered, “Sir, what can I do for you?”
Heath, looking stern, asked, “How’s the investigation going?”

‘It’s done… Kieran replied.
“Bring me the files, Heath ordered.

Kieran placed the files on Heath’s desk. Heath was shocked. Just two pages? For someone who’s lived 18 years?
Kieran explained, “Miss Aurora’s background is simple. She’s the daughter of Sebastian’s first wife, who he had no feelings for. He cheated on her with the current Mrs. Madeline Pendleton. The first wife went a bit mad after childbirth and later died, leaving Aurora neglected. She’s been pretty much invisible in the Pendleton family. Servants say she’s a bit slow, like her mother. Until about a month ago, she fell down the stairs, was unconscious for two days, and woke up a different person. You know the rest.”
Heath flipped through the two pages multiple times, still in disbelief, “That’s it? Just this?”
Kieran nodded reluctantly, “Sir, that’s really it. Aurora’s life has been a straight line between school and home. She’s a loner, no friends, poor grades, and average looks. No one paid her any mind.”
Heath put down the files and rubbed his temples. For the first time, he was stumped.
Aurora a loner? She seemed so lively. Average looks? She was dazzling. Even the claim that she was a bit slow didn’t add up; she was clearly sharp and clever.
The Aurora in these files was not the Aurora he knew.
And the files said Aurora had a crush on Ethan from the Song family, but she was mumbling Dominic’s name when drunk.
It seemed everything changed a month ago when Aurora fell down the stairs and was unconscious for two days. She woke up confident, vibrant, and cunning, like a mischievous little fox.
But the doctors had said it was a minor concussion. How could that lead to such a drastic change?
