Josefina was used to hearing only good things from Annika. No matter what Josefina did, Annika always had a compliment ready.
“How’s Mason doing?” Josefina asked.
Annika responded, “She’s in much better spirits now, always expressing her gratitude towards you, Ms. Josefina.”
“I’ll go check on her,” Josefina said, handing a contract over to Annika, who tucked it into the large pocket of her apron, perfect for carrying such things.
...
Mason was finally able to step outside and bask in a bit of sunshine. The sun was warm and soothing, yet Mason still felt a chill within her bones.
The sight of a worm creeping out of her wound—half in, half out—was enough to make anyone's skin crawl.
Annika, despite having seen these creatures before, was still frightened and kept her distance. She tried to stop Josefina from getting too close.
Josefina waved her off, assuring, “It’s okay.”
Aware of Josefina's talents, Annika retreated, staying clear of the creepy crawlies.
Mason pulled her sleeve down to hide the worms, hoping not to scare anyone else.
Adam, who was keeping an eye on Mason, thought, “Great, like I’m supposed to not be terrified?” In truth, he was scared out of his wits. Those things were downright horrifying!
Mason managed to smile faintly. “You’re here.”
The way Mason addressed her made Josefina feel a bit older than she’d like.
Josefina also noticed that Mason seemed to have given up hope of surviving, almost accepting her fate.
“You don’t have to be so afraid. I’m not planning to harm you, Mason. You’re important to me. Being the tenth-generation heir of the Snider family makes you valuable. I’ve stopped those people from using the parasites to find you.”
Mason forced a smile. “Thank you.”
