Miss Josefina: Nobody's Princess novel Chapter 1291

The vagrant moved steadily through the maze of city streets, ducking in and out of alleys until he finally slipped into a narrow lane. He hunched his shoulders, keeping his head down, and sneaked into a crumbling courtyard almost swallowed up by overgrown shrubs.

Inside the yard, he straightened up, all traces of his slouched, ragged persona gone. His back was suddenly straight, his eyes alert, his energy crackling beneath the surface. Without a second thought, he tossed aside the battered cup he used for begging and strode into the shabby house, locking the door behind him.

He was sure no one knew what he was really up to.

But he had no idea that, while he was chasing his own prey, someone else was hunting him. Josefina was that someone—the clever little bird watching from above.

High up in a tree, hidden by leaves, Josefina trained her binoculars on the vagrant, watching him scan the street, double back, and finally slip inside the old house. To her, his antics were almost entertaining—like watching an amateur spy movie play out in real time.

Josefina made a mental note of the address and waited, watching for a while longer. When the vagrant didn't come out, she dug through her bag, pulled out a disguise, and got ready to sneak a peek inside. Who knew? Maybe there was something valuable hidden in that rundown place.

She crept closer, using the shadows of the trees for cover, and pressed herself into a corner of the wall, keeping a sharp eye on the house. She could just make out the vagrant’s voice through an open window—he was on the phone, whispering urgently.

“Victoria, I’ve been watching Oliver’s route every day, but he’s unpredictable. He passed by at eight today, ten tomorrow—no pattern. I can’t make a move yet.”

Josefina’s eyebrows shot up. Wait, did she just overhear something about Oliver? Was this guy planning to take Oliver out?

This was way bigger than she thought. She was definitely in the right place.

The vagrant kept talking. “Victoria, I’ve lost contact with the fake Dominic. Word is, he was taken away, but I haven’t found out where yet. I know I’ve been lying low for a long time, and I’m sorry for letting you down. How about this—tonight I’ll call the guys together, and we’ll step things up. Push harder. See if we can break through.”

He ended the call and quickly dialed another number.

When he was done, he left the house, disappearing into the night.

Josefina stayed hidden in the tree until she was sure he was gone. Only then did she climb down and slip away as quietly as she’d arrived.
