The night was thick with tension when Rowan showed up. As soon as Sydney heard his arrival, she dashed upstairs, applied some makeup, and slipped into a skimpy nightgown before coming back down.
She fussed with her nightgown, making it appear even more disheveled, and then sauntered over to sit beside Rowan.
“Rowan, you finally came. I thought you were never going to see me again,” she said, her voice sweet and inviting.
Rowan didn’t say a word. Sydney leaned her head on his shoulder, her voice dripping with vulnerability. “Rowan, you've got it all wrong. I’ve never lied to you. How can you doubt me after everything we’ve been through?”
Rowan pushed her away and moved to the opposite couch. Sydney’s hand hung awkwardly in the air before dropping to her side.
He tossed a stack of papers onto the table in front of her.
Sydney picked them up and froze at the sight of the bold words: “Divorce Agreement.” She looked up at Rowan, disbelief etched across her face.
“You want a divorce?”
“You read it right. I want a divorce,” Rowan replied, his tone icy.
Hearing it from his lips, Sydney shook her head, struggling to accept the reality.
“Rowan, why? What did I do wrong? Was everything we had just a lie?”
“You know the answer better than I do, don’t you?” Rowan’s gaze was cold and relentless.
Sydney avoided his eyes, a wave of panic and heaviness settling in her heart. She moved to sit beside him again, clutching his arm desperately.
“Rowan, why divorce me? Is it because of that report? Those people are just trying to smear me. Don’t you know how I’ve been with you all these years?”
“I’m here for your signature, not to reminisce. Sign the papers, Sydney.”
