Josefina was completely caught off guard when she saw who was chasing her.
"Oliver?"
"Oliver, what are you doing here?" she exclaimed, surprise written all over her face.
Oliver came up to her and gently took the gadget from her hands.
He couldn't tear his eyes away from it. The craftsmanship was exquisite, the device small and sharp—definitely something Josefina had made herself.
With a quick flick of a button, the weapon turned into a lighter.
"I wanted to surprise you, but you kept running," Oliver said with a chuckle.
Josefina took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "I was just minding my own business, and suddenly you're chasing me like a madman. You nearly scared me to death! What kind of surprise is that?"
"That's my bad, totally my fault," Oliver admitted, reaching out to take her hand.
Josefina pulled away, keeping a bit of distance between them.
He blinked, baffled by her reaction. Why was she pulling away?
Undeterred, Oliver reached for her hand again, only for her to pull back once more.
"I’ve got things to do," she said, a bit curtly.
"What things? Let me tag along," he suggested.
"Aren't you busy? How do you have time to hang out with me?"
"I've got all the time in the world for you, Josie. Just say the word, and I'm there."
They locked eyes, a silent challenge passing between them. Without warning, Oliver scooped her up and placed her into her car.
"Josie, why are you being so distant? Did I do something wrong?"
"I'm not being distant. You're just imagining things."
Josefina started the engine and drove off.
Oliver sat beside her, sensing that she might be upset with him.
"Josie, are you mad because I got back late?"
"No."
"What’s so funny?" Josefina asked, irritation creeping into her voice.
Oliver caught her hand and kissed it, his grip firm despite her attempts to pull away.
"Josie, you're jealous, and that makes me so happy."
His smile grew even brighter, full of pure delight.
"Oliver, have you lost your mind? What’s so funny?"
"Josie, I'm thrilled. You're jealous, which means you care about me."
Josefina tried to leave, but Oliver held onto her hand, his joy unmistakable. "I always thought I was the one pushing this relationship, and you were just going along with it. But Josie, it turns out you care too."
Her face turned crimson, but Oliver wouldn't let go of her hand.
"Oliver, you're crazy."
Her frustration was evident as she tried to free herself from his grip.
"Josie," he said, his voice softening, "the woman in that photo is just a client's daughter. She did express her feelings, but I turned her down and told her I have a fiancée. The person who took the photo caught us at an angle that makes it look like we're close, but there was actually a chair between us."
