The artificial lake rippled in the moonlight.
The Yardley family's bodyguards and staff totaled around twenty people. They moved with extreme stealth as they surrounded the man sitting by the lake.
The large enclosure slowly tightened, but the person by the lake remained completely oblivious.
He was swinging his impossibly long legs, chewing on a reed, and staring up at the stars in the sky.
The twinkling starry sky was reflected in his dark eyes, accentuating a face of breathtaking, ethereal beauty.
The bodyguards were getting closer and closer.
The butler made a hand signal, and everyone lunged at the man in perfect unison.
However, at that exact moment.
The man suddenly stood up, bent over, and slipped right through the gap in the bodyguards' encirclement.
His long legs quickly strode away, and before long, he had vanished from the sight of the Yardley family.
"Useless!" Mrs. Yardley flew into a rage. "What are you all just standing there for? Hurry up and chase him down!"
Chase also rushed to join the search.
Mrs. Yardley called out to him. "Stop right there. I have a question for you."
Chase halted his steps.
"That girl just now, who was she?" Mrs. Yardley asked calmly, her tone laced with casual indifference.
But Chase knew that since his mother had asked, it meant she had taken an interest in the matter.
He remembered that when he was very young, his mother and Clara's mother were very close. They had even kept Clara over for dinner and mentioned wanting to take her in as a goddaughter.
Now that Clara had returned to Springfield, his mother should be very happy, right?
"That's Clara. Clara Lambert," Chase said, a light shining in his eyes. "Aunt Pearl's daughter. Mom, do you remember?"
