The sun was high in the sky.

Sunlight crept slowly through the window, inching across the bed.

Ethan yawned as he crawled out of bed. He rubbed his eyes, went to the bathroom, and then opened his door to head downstairs for food.

The second he stepped into the hallway, he spotted his older brother crawling on the floor, looking incredibly suspicious.

"Jules, what are you doing?"

Ethan's sudden voice scared Jules half to death.

Jules lunged forward and slapped a hand over Ethan's mouth. "Shh! Keep your voice down! If you wake her up, you're dead meat!"

Ethan glanced at the clock. It was already 9:00 AM. There was no way Clara was still asleep.

"I caught these in the garden downstairs first thing in the morning!"

Jules opened his palm. Two massive, fat green caterpillars were squirming in his hand.

Ethan immediately backed away in disgust. "Jules, aren't you a little too old for this? Why are you still playing with bugs?"

"You don't know anything!" Jules sneered. "Every single girl is terrified of these things! Clara acts so tough and loves threatening people, right? Well, I'm going to scare her to death with these! Heh heh!"

He softened his footsteps and crept silently to Clara's bedroom door.

Then, lying flat on his stomach, he carefully tried to slide the two caterpillars under the crack of the door. Unfortunately, the bugs had minds of their own and refused to crawl inside.

"Get in there, damn it!"

"If you don't go in, I'll squash you!"

Under Jules's fierce threats, the two miserable caterpillars finally wriggled their way under the door.

"Perfect!"

Jules dusted off his hands and stood up triumphantly.

On the other side of the door.

Theodore had just popped the lid off the tin box. Inside lay a pile of colorful, round candies, each color giving off a uniquely sweet aroma.

The candy smelled incredible. He had never smelled anything so enticing in his life.
