Chapter 89-1
(Jessica’s POV)
“Sabrina Moore? We have your kid, Jake Reed. If you want to see him alive, come to this location within half an hour. And remember. You must come alone. Otherwise…you’ll never see your son again.”
I watch Freya from the shadows as she delivers the threat with all the dramatic flair of a B-movie villain.
She’s practically glowing with satisfaction. Puffed up like she just accomplished something impressive instead of kidnapping a five-year-old.
Fool.
What exactly is she so proud of? Snatching a kindergartener from school? Congratulations, you’ve achieved what any random stranger with candy could do.
If she had any real ability, any actual spine, she’d confront Sabrina face-to-face. Adult to adult. No hostages. No manipulation.
But no. She feels accomplished in kidnapping a five-year old.
What an idiot.
I snort quietly and turn my attention back to the real problem.
Jake Reed.
The brat’s been staring at me since Freya dragged him into this abandoned construction site. Not at Freya.
Not at his surroundings. At me.
And it’s not the scared, confused stare of a traumatized child.
It’s scrutinizing, like he’s trying to solve a puzzle.
The look in those eyes-too knowing, too intelligent for a five-year-old-makes my skin crawl.
But that’s impossible. I’m covered head to toe in black. Face mask pulled up to my eye. Voice disguised.
Posture changed.
Even my own father wouldn’t recognize me like this.
So why does this kid keep looking at me like he knows exactly who I am?
“What are you looking at, kid?” I snap, keeping my voice low and gravelly. Unfamiliar.
Jake tilts his head. Studies me for another long moment.
This is why I hate this devious kid. Why can’t he just behave like any normal five-year old would in this situation? I would’ve enjoyed it more if he’d shown even the slightest bit of fear, or cried his lungs out. “Mean Lady Jessica, I knew you were a bad woman. See? You finally revealed yourself.”

Chapter 822
My heart stops.
What the actual fuck.
He recognized me?-Even in this get-up?
How?
I spin away from him, fumbling for the compact mirror in my pocket. My hands are shaking as I flip it open and check my reflection.
Nothing’s out of place. The black mask covers everything from my nose down. My hair’s tucked completely under a knit cap. My eyes-the only visible part-are just eyes Generic. Common.
There’s no way he recognized me.
Which means he’s testing me. Fishing. Hoping I’ll react and confirm his guess.
Smart little bastard.
I could throttle him from how infuriated I am right now.
I snap the mirror shut and turn back around, schooling my expression into something cold. Unmoved.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I say in the same low voice. “Keep quiet or things will get worse for you.”
“You’re definitely Mean Lady Jessica.” Jake’s voice is matter-of-fact. Not scared. Not even particularly upset. “Nobody else is mean enough to kidnap a kid just because they’re jealous of his mom.”
“I said be quiet-”
“And you’re wearing the same perfume you wore at my school that one time. The time you came to tell me
you’re going to be my new mom, and if I know what’s good for me, I would say good things about you in
front of my dad.” He wrinkles his nose. “It smells like old flowers and vinegar.”
I freeze.
The perfume. Shit. I forgot about the perfume.
It’s designer. Expensive. Distinctive.
