A few days later, after arriving here at Mt. Snowy wherever-the-heck-we-are, I’m suffering daily panic attacks from being separated from my son. It has been way too long since I saw him, and I’m so worried about him. Is he okay? Is my mother taking care of him? Is he crying more than usual? I can’t stop thinking about him, and to prevent me from panicking too much, Duncan has been keeping my milk production active so I can keep breastfeeding when we get home.

“Blair? I found more of those berries you like,” Duncan announces.

He left the cave this morning to go scavenging. He does it every morning to keep himself sane. Me? I just hug my knees and stare at the walls. I’m not keeping myself sane, though. I think I have an oncoming depression.

I glance up from where I’m huddled against the cave wall, my eyes dull and listless. Even the mention of food does little to rouse my interest. All I can think about is my baby, my precious Crow, and how long it’s been since I held him in my arms.

“Thanks,” I mutter tonelessly as Duncan sets the berries down beside me.

He frowns, crouching down to my level. “Blair, you need to eat something. Keep your strength up.” His hand reaches out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, but I flinch away from his touch.

Hurt flashes across his face before he masks it. “Talk to me, sweetheart. I know being away from Crow is killing you. It’s killing me too. But we’ll find a way back to him, I promise.”

I shake my head, tears welling in my eyes. “How, Duncan? We don’t even know where we are or how that portal brought us here. We could be in a completely different realm for all we know! And every day that passes is another day Crow is without us. He needs me, Duncan. He needs his mother’s milk, my scent, my touch…” A sob catches in my throat. “What if he thinks we’ve abandoned him?”

“Hey, hey,” Duncan soothes, gathering me into his arms despite my initial resistance. “Crow knows we would never abandon him.”

I move around in Duncan’s lap until we are chest-to-chest, and I can cry against his shoulder. “B-but what if time passes differently in this realm? What if we come home to a grown man that doesn’t recognize us?”

Duncan sighs before hugging me tight. “That won’t happen, Blair,” he murmurs. “Noah and Amy are watching over Crow, remember? They will take good care of him until we get back, or they will leave him with your mother. And yes, I know the two of you don’t get along, but she wouldn’t hurt her grandson. She loves him.”

I sniffle. “You think Noah is trying to find us?”

“Definitely, and once he does, he will open a portal for us… I think he should be able to do that with his time magic.”

“…time magic can open portals?”

“I have no clue, but I gotta have faith, right? Noah will find us and bring us home.”

I stay silent for a bit before saying, “I don’t know if Noah can open portals, but…what if you can? With your dragon magic? Have you ever attempted something like that?”

Duncan laughs uneasily. “I can only breathe fire, Blair. That’s the only magic my dragon has.”

“What if you’re wrong? What if you’re able to do more than that but just don’t know it yet?”

Duncan considers my suggestion, his brow furrowing thoughtfully. “I mean, it’s possible, I suppose. Dragons are said to have all sorts of mystical powers beyond just breathing fire. I’ve just never really tried to tap into anything else.”

Hope flutters in my chest at his words. “Then maybe now is the time to start trying. For Crow’s sake.”

Duncan is silent for a bit before burying his nose into my hair as if wanting to hide. “You’re right. I have to try, but…how am I supposed to tap into my magic when my dragon is silent? Even after having sex with you, he still isn’t present.”

“So you’re basically saying your dragon wants something else than sex?”

“Mhm, but it’s related to you, I can feel it.”

I breathe a laugh. “So, in other words, your dragon doesn’t think the drama between us is settled yet and is denying you access to your other form because of it?”

“Something like that.”

“So, what do you think he wants?”

Duncan is silent for a long moment, his brow furrowed in thought as he holds me close. I can practically hear the gears turning in his head as he tries to decipher what his dragon half needs from me.

“I think…” he begins slowly, “I think he wants to know that you truly forgive me. That you accept me as your equal partner and mate, dragon powers or not.”

I pull back slightly to meet his gaze, my heart clenching at the vulnerability I see there. “Duncan, of course, I forgive you. I thought I made that clear the other night when we…” I blush, remembering our passionate lovemaking.

A small smile tugs at his lips. “I know, and it was amazing. But I think my dragon needs to hear the words directly from you,” his tone turns teasing since he knows how hard this will be for me, “He needs that verbal affirmation to fully believe it.”

My lower lip juts out. “Do I have to?”

“Yes.”

“…are you sure?”

Amusement lights up his eyes. “I’m positive.”

I sigh. “Alright…here goes nothing,” I take a deep breath, and then, in a serious tone, I say, “Duncan, I forgive

you completely and utterly. Not just for taking over as Alpha but for everything that’s happened between us. I accept you as my mate, my partner in all things. Human, dragon, or anything in between. You are my home, my heart, and I’m sorry that I let my jealousy get in our way.”

“Thank you,” he grins. “Now, shall we get outside the cave and try some dragon magic?”

I blink again and again until it dawns on me. “You bastard! Your magic is back, isn’t it? You just wanted to hear me say those words!”

Duncan’s laughter is a dead giveaway. I playfully smack him in the chest, but that only makes his laughter grow louder in volume.

“You sneaky dragon! I can’t believe you tricked me like that!”

He catches my hands, bringing them to his lips for a kiss. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I couldn’t resist. Your face was just too adorable when you were trying to be all serious.”

I narrow my eyes at him, trying to maintain my indignant facade, but the twinkle of mirth in his blue gaze makes it impossible. A smile tugs at my lips despite my best efforts. “You’re lucky I love you, or else I’d kick your scaly butt for that little stunt.”

“Is that so?” he hums, nuzzling my neck. “You make it sound as if I wouldn’t enjoy that.”

Heat floods my cheeks at Duncan’s flirtatious words. “Careful what you wish for, dragon boy. I still have my lycan strength, you know.”

Duncan grins, looking entirely too pleased with himself. “Oh, I’m counting on it,” he purrs, nipping playfully at my earlobe.

A shiver runs down my spine, desire sparking low in my belly. As much as I want to give in to the temptation of his touch, the urgent need to get back to our son takes precedence.

I push lightly at his chest. “Later, handsome. Right now, we need to focus on getting home to Crow.”

Seriousness settles over Duncan’s features as he nods. “You’re right. Let’s step outside and see if I can conjure a portal.”

We leave the cave behind, and once we are standing in the snow entirely naked, I stare at Duncan’s muscular back as he steps forward to shape-shift. It actually worries me to watch him. What if things will revert back to crap once he shape-shifts and we get back home?

As I watch Duncan’s powerful form ripple and expand into his massive dragon shape, a sense of trepidation settles over me. I’m thrilled that his magic has returned and that we can finally try to get back home to our son, but a small part of me fears what will happen once we’re back in the real world. Will the closeness and understanding we’ve found here in this cave evaporate like morning mist?

Duncan, now fully transformed, turns his great horned head to look at me. His electric blue eyes, so familiar even in this form, seem to sense my unease. It’s actually strange seeing such a fearsome creature look so concerned, and I snort when he gently bops his enormous snout against my shoulder, rumbling questioningly.

I reach up to stroke the smooth scales along his jaw. marveling at how this terrifying beast can also be so

tender. “I’m okay,” I assure him. “Just…nervous about what happens when we get back, I guess.”

Duncan makes a soft crooning noise, nuzzling into my touch. I get the distinct impression he’s trying to comfort me, to silently convey that he won’t let things revert back to how they were before.

Taking a deep breath, I step back and nod. “Alright, big guy. Let’s see what this dragon magic of yours can do. Take us home to our boy.”

Duncan rears back his huge head and unleashes a thunderous roar that…does nothing.

I blink multiple times. “Was that your attempt at opening a portal?”

Duncan gives me a sheepish look, as much as a dragon’s features can appear sheepish.

A sigh leaves my lips. “You have to try harder, man.”

Duncan nods eagerly and then sits down on the ground. It shakes in response, and I have to catch myself not to fall down on my butt. Duncan, however, doesn’t seem to mind sitting on his scaled butt like an oversized dog.

He closes his eyes, appearing to concentrate deeply. I watch him intently, waiting for some sign that his magic is working. Long moments pass in silence, broken only by the occasional rumble emanating from Duncan’s chest.

Just as I’m about to lose hope, a shimmering vortex appears in the air before us.

My heart leaps into my throat. Duncan actually did it. He opened a portal back to our world!

“You did it!” I exclaim, turning to him with a fierce grin. “I knew you could-”

My words are cut off as the vortex doubles in size in the blink of an eye. The force of it whipping my hair back from my face. I stagger, throwing my arms up instinctively.

And then, to my horror, I feel my feet leave the ground. The portal’s gravitational pull has me in its thrall, dragging me inexorably forward no matter how I struggle against it.

“Duncan!” I scream in terror as I’m yanked off my feet.

But my mate won’t let me die. He is there in a flash to wrap his large body around me like a shield. His wings fold on us as I’m brought to his chest, where I cling to him as we are both sucked into the vortex.

Bile rises to my mouth, but I swallow it down. Again and again, as we are thrown to the left and right before, we are spit out and falling like a comet from the skies.

“OH MY GOD, WHAT IS HAPPENING?!”

My scream is lost to the wind as the ground rushes up to meet us at terrifying speed. Distantly, I register the glittering lights and towering spires of a city skyline. We’ve made it back to the human realm, but we are about to land on top of a building out in the woods!

“Duncan, look out!” I shriek, bracing for impact.
