“Breaking up with me is stupid, and you know it, Cam. The moon goddess said your fated mate might not live for very long, but I’m perfectly healthy.”
My eyes are drawn to my ex-girlfriend, Lautner. She is sitting in the passenger seat with her arms folded over her chest. I have a feeling I won’t be able to get her out of my chair without using force. The plan had been to have the “I can’t be with you unless you’re not my fated mate” talk with her, but she isn’t taking it well.
“Oh yeah?” I ask in a sarcastic tone. “So what do you think I should do? Ditch my fated mate for you?”
Lautner narrows her pretty little eyes. “I think you should keep me around. I’m not stupid enough not to realize that a wolf wants to be with their fated mate, but once your dies you need someone to comfort you. Someone who already knows and loves you. That someone could be me, Cam.”
I blink at her, shocked by the bluntness and morbidity of her suggestion. “You want me to keep you around as some kind of backup plan for when my mate potentially dies? Do you hear how crazy that sounds?”
She huffs, flipping her long blonde hair over her shoulder. “It’s not crazy, it’s practical. We have a good thing going, Cam. Why throw it all away when we can resume our relationship after your mate has died.”
Her words are so crazy that I have to look out through the window in order not to bark at her. I knew breaking things off with Lautner wouldn’t be easy, but I didn’t expect her to go this far. It makes me realize that despite dating her, I know very little about Lautner. She is popular and pretty-I think those are her only good qualities since her soul is obviously rotten through and through.
“Cam? Are you listening to me?”
I sigh heavily and stop the car outside Lautner’s house. She is wealthy and I nod up at her family’s pretty white mansion with its perfectly manicured lawn.
“You should probably get out of the car,” I tell her, to which she stares at me.
“What?”
“We are at your place now,” I finally turn to look at her, but my face is flat and cold. “And you should probably get out of the car before I do something I might come to regret.”
“Huh? What do you mean? Are you angry with me? Was it something I said?”
I release a bitter laugh. “Lautner, you were just talking about how my mate is going to die for sure, and now you’re asking me if it’s something you said? Are you serious?”
Lautner’s eyes widen. She finally seems to realize how hard I’m trying to remain calm. Believe me, I’m not. My inner wolf wants to tear apart the female inside my car, but I’m pushing down his desires.
“Cam…” Lautner reaches out, placing a hand on my bicep in an attempt to calm me. “Cam, I didn’t mean it like that. I was just trying to be realistic about the situation. I care about you and want to be there for you, no matter what happens.”

But her touch feels like a stamp scorching my skin. I don’t want her touching me, and suddenly, it becomes harder to keep my growling wolf in check. My irritation is becoming harder to control, and I jerk my arm away, my jaw clenching as I struggle to contain the rage bubbling up inside me. The wolf within me paces restlessly, urging me to put this insolent female in her place.
In the end, the wolf wins, and I dig my eyes into Lautner. “Realistic?” I spit out the word like venom. “You call wishing for the death of my fated mate realistic? That’s cold, even for you, Lautner.”
She flinches at my tone but doesn’t back down. “I’m not wishing for anyone’s death! I’m just saying that if the worst does happen, you don’t have to be alone. I can be there for you, Cam. We can have a future together.”
A mirthless laugh escapes my lips. “A future built on the death of my mate? No thanks. I don’t want any part of that sick fantasy.”
“It isn’t a fantasy! Your mate is going to die-”
“Get out,” I interrupt with my voice taking on a dangerous tone, the power of an Alpha rising to the surface. “Get out of my car and don’t call me. We are done.”
Actual tears glimmer in her eyes. I don’t think it’s because she is actually sad. Those tears are only coming to the surface because I’ve shattered her pride. Her following sentence proves that.
“You’re making a mistake, Cam. You’ll regret pushing me away when you need me the most.”
Is she serious? Does she even realize that using that threatening tone with her future Alpha could potentially lead to her fucking death?
“The only mistake was ever getting involved with someone as twisted as you.” I grip the steering wheel tightly, barely restraining my wolf’s urge to forcibly remove her from my vehicle. “Now, for the last time-get out!”
The command comes out as an Alpha order and I can see when it registers inside Lautner’s mind. She obviously doesn’t want to leave the car, but the fear I’ve awakened with her by using my Alpha voice makes her stumble out of the car, her legs shaking from the force of my voice.
Still, despite the fear in her eyes, she dares to open her mouth one more time. “I will see you at your birthday party, Cam. It’s something I would miss for all the money in the world. You see, I want to know who your fated mate is, and after her illness has been discovered-”
I reach for the door and slam it shut before pressing the gas pedal, not waiting to hear the rest of Lautner’s delusional ramblings. The tires screech against the pavement as I peel away from the curb, leaving her in the dust. In the mirror, I can see her gaping at my retreating car-suits the bitch right for openly disrespecting my future mate.
