“There’s the birthday boy!” Lisa, my stepmother, exclaims the morning before my birthday. The reason she does this is because werewolves usually celebrate their eighteenth birthday the day before so that we can find our mate at midnight.
She walks over to the kitchen table, where I’m busy eating my cereal, and grabs my cheek. “Are you excited?”
I wave her away with my hand, and when that doesn’t work, I shoot her a glare, “If you could treat me like a grownup for one second, that would be great.”
Lisa recoils as if stung, her smile faltering. “I’m sorry, Cam. I didn’t mean to baby you. It’s just… This is such a big day, and I’m so happy for you.”
Despite my annoyance, a twinge of guilt nips at me. Lisa has always tried her best to be a good stepmother, and the only reason I’m irritated is that I now realize all her efforts have been put into me. She hasn’t given her own daughter even a fraction of her love.
Poor Eli. It can’t have been easy living in my shadow growing up. If we end up being fated mates-which we might since I don’t know of any other female werewolf suffering from a deadly disease-it will probably take her some time to not feel bitterness towards me.
“What’s up, guys?”
I look up when Eli waltzes into the kitchen. Her blonde hair is a tousled mess stuck in a bun on the top of her head and I blink repeatedly when I notice she is wearing a large hoodie that looks an awful lot like mine.
Eli yawns sleepily as she shuffles over to the cereal cupboard, oblivious to my stare. She reaches up to grab a box, the hoodie riding up to reveal a strip of pale skin above her sleep shorts. I quickly avert my gaze, my cheeks heating. Eli is older than me, but it isn’t until now that I’ve started seeing her for what she is—a
woman.
“Morning,” I mumble, suddenly very interested in my cereal bowl.
“Excited for your big day, birthday boy?” Eli teases as she plops down across from me with her own bowl. Once she starts crunching on her cereal, her mother sighs.
“Eli, you’re a grown woman, right? So maybe start acting like it and stop chomping on your cereal like a cow.”
I almost choke on my cereal. Has Lisa always spoken to Eli with such a lack of respect? How did I never pick up on that before?!
“Uh, Lisa? Maybe you shouldn’t speak to your daughter-”
“I can fight my own battles, thank you, Camden,” Eli cuts me off before giving her mother a lazy smile. “And you, Mother, can mind your own fucking business, okay?”
Lisa gasps, her eyes wide with shock and anger. “Elmyra! How dare you speak to me that way! I am your mother, and you will show me respect.”

Eli just rolls her eyes and continues munching on her cereal nonchalantly. “Yeah, yeah. Respect is earned, not given, mother dearest,” she looks up with a cocky little smile that does things to my cock, which I don’t want to acknowledge. “And lately, you haven’t been earning much of it from me.”
Yikes. Should I intervene or let them hash it out? The tension between Eli and Lisa is bloody obvious now that I’m paying attention to it. Years of resentment are simmering right beneath the surface.
Eli and her mother stare each other down for a tense moment before Lisa finally breaks away with an indignant huff. “We’ll discuss your attitude later, young lady,” she snaps before turning on her heel and marching out of the kitchen.
Eli sighs loudly. “I’m twenty-three, not five. It’s not like I’m going to listen to you berating me.”
Lisa releases a loud, “Hmpt!” in the hallway but says nothing else. Once she is gone, I turn to face Eli.
“That was…intense,” I remark, unsure what else to say.
Eli just shrugs, her warm brown eyes meeting mine briefly before she returns to her cereal. “Do you see what I mean now? About you being the golden child of the family?”
“I guess…” I frown, a sinking feeling in my gut. “Did you hate me growing up?”
She lets out a humorless chuckle. “Sometimes, but it was rather hard to hate you when you stuck to me like glue.”
A furious blush spreads over my skin. “I didn’t stick to you like glue!” I mutter.
Eli grins. “Right… So when you had a nightmare and snuck into my bedroom-”
“That only happened once!” I interject.
Eli’s grin widens. “Once? Try at least a dozen times. You were always crawling into my bed, seeking comfort from your big sis.”
I groan, burying my face in my hands. “Can we not talk about this? It’s embarrassing.”
“What’s embarrassing is how much you used to idolize me,” Eli teases, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Remember when you tried to dye your hair blonde to match mine?”
I peek through my fingers, glaring at her. “Can we talk about something else?”
Eli throws her head back and laughs. “Nah, I love this topic, especially on your birthday. Talking about the past is fun, and you were such a cute little kid. What happened?”
“I grew up,” I grumble, lowering my hands. “And realized that my stepsister is a pain in the ass.”
“Ouch.”, Eli clutches her chest in mock hurt. “And here I thought we had something special.”
I roll my eyes in response to Eli teasing me and get to my feet. That’s when I notice Eli’s gaze quickly flickering down to my biceps before returning to the table when I raise an eyebrow. Was she just…checking me out? Or did I imagine it?

I shake off the thought, deciding I must have imagined it. Eli is my stepsister, after all. There’s no way she would be checking me out…right?
“I better get ready for the party. The pack elders want to talk to me and give me a few words of advice before I drink myself stupid later tonight.”
“Right,” Eli smiles. “I guess I will see you later.”
Her words surprise me. “Oh, you’re coming?”
“Am I not allowed to? You’re having a pool party at home, so I just assumed I could stop by with my friends.”
“Of course, you’re allowed! I was just…assuming you would be hiding upstairs.”
“No,” she smiles, and I swear I feel flutters in my stomach-what’s wrong with me? “It’s not every day my baby bro turns eighteen and finds his fated mate. I wouldn’t miss it.”
There’s an odd tone to her voice that I can’t quite place. Wistfulness? Sadness? I’m not sure. But before I can ponder it further, Eli is standing up and dumping her bowl in the sink.
“I’ve got some stuff to do before the party,” she says breezily. “See you tonight, birthday boy.”
She lifts her hand to ruffle my hair but stops herself when she realizes she can’t reach the top of my head. It shocks me. I knew I was taller than her, but seeing her unable to reach my head amuses me. Eli is a shortie.
“Not so easy to mess with my hair now, is it?”
Eli narrows her eyes playfully. “Don’t get too cocky, Cam. You may be taller, but I can still take you down.”
I scoff at Eli’s challenge. “Pfft! You think you can take me, an Alpha, down so easily?”
A mischievous glint enters her eyes. “I know I can. Want to test that theory?”
Before I can respond, Eli lunges at me, catching me completely off guard. It’s not every day you get attacked as the pack’s Alpha. No one would dare touch me without my permission, but Eli is different.
She fights me with laughter coming up her throat, and we tumble to the kitchen floor. Despite her smaller size, Eli is surprisingly strong. I can tell the werewolf cancer is getting to her, though. She is already panting, so I let her flip me onto my back and straddle my waist. I look up at her in wonder, and the little thing uses it as an opportunity to pin my muscular arms above my head.
“Pinned ya,” she grins down at me triumphantly.
My breathing becomes heavier as I watch her. Having Eli on top of me, her face mere inches from mine stirs something inside of me. A hunger I’ve never felt before.
Eli must feel it, too, because her grin falters and turns into something less cocky as her eyes trail down my muscular arms and land on my chest. If I’m not mistaken, there’s a blush working its way to her cheeks, and it only grows more intense when her gaze lands on my lips.
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest as Eli’s eyes linger on my mouth. The air between us crackles

“Eli…” I breathe out her name, my voice husky with desire I didn’t even know I was capable of feeling for my stepsister.
Her eyes snap back to mine, wide and startled, as if she’s just realizing the position we’re in. Abruptly, she scrambles off me, putting distance between us.
“I, uh, I should go,” she stammers, not meeting my gaze. “Got things to do. See you at the party.”
Before I can say a word, Eli bolts out of the kitchen, leaving me lying on the floor, stunned and aching for her touch. I slowly sit up, running a hand through my hair as I try to make sense of what just happened.
Did Eli and I almost…?
Yes, we did.
Did I like it?
Yup.
Am I currently hoping she is my fated mate?
…I look between my legs, and my lips turn into a thin stretch. Great. I’m hard for my stepsister. I mean, I can try to hide it all I want, but there’s no pretending my bulge isn’t there. My body, hell, even my mind, is set on Eli. I want her. But if she is my fated mate, that means she might not live for very long-that’s what the moon goddess said.
A sigh leaves my lips. “What the fuck am I supposed to do? Pray that Eli isn’t my fated mate so that she can live a long life without me? Or selfishly wish for her to be mine, even if it means losing her too soon?”
