“This drink is sooo good,” Evie slurps on her alcohol-infused milkshake while glancing around the pool with hollowed cheeks. This makes her sister dramatically roll her eyes.
“Can you stop looking at everyone’s abs?” Clara sounds embarrassed.
“Uh, fuck no?” Evie tells her sister. “How often do we go to pool parties? The answer is never, so now that I have the chance to check out male rumps and abs, I will look my share, and NO ONE can stop me.”
I silently laugh at my friends’ antics. Evie’s shameless ogling and Clara’s exasperation are a welcome distraction from the nerves fluttering in my stomach. Ever since that charged moment with Cam in the kitchen, I’ve had daydreams of Cam naked hitting my brain.
And that’s not a good thing because that man can make me so fucking horny that I’ve had to change my underwear three times today.
I take a sip of my own drink, trying to focus on the fruity flavors and not on the fact that in just a few short hours, Cam will find out who his fated mate is. And there’s a very real possibility it could be me.
“Earth to Eli!” Evie waves a hand in front of my face, jolting me out of my reverie. “Were you even listening to me?”
“Sorry,” I mutter. “I was just…thinking.”
Clara gives me a knowing look. “About Cam?”
I don’t answer, but my silence is confirmation enough. Evie squeals and points at me with her free hand.
“Oh my gosh, you totally have the hots for your stepbrother! This is like a forbidden romance novel come to life!”
“Shh!” I hiss, glancing around to make sure no one overheard. “It’s not like that, okay? I’m just…confused about what I’m feeling.”
Clara places a comforting hand on my arm. “It’s understandable, Eli. The whole fated mates thing is a lot to process, especially when it involves someone you’ve known your whole life.”
“Exactly. And with my cancer back, I don’t know if pursuing anything with Cam is even fair to him, you know?”
Evie’s excitement dims a bit, but then she sees something behind me and gawks. “Holy moon goddess,” her jaw slacks to the ground, and when she looks at me, I grow incredibly curious because it seems like she has seen God himself.
“What?” I whisper-yell at her, freezing when I realize even Clara looks like a speared goldfish. “Why are you guys looking like you were struck by lightning?”
“We might as well have been struck by lightning…..” Clara mumbles, which is so unlike her since she rarely

reacts to anything.
I narrow my eyes. “What the heck are you two on about? Should I be worried?”

None of my friends laugh. Instead, they keep staring ahead until Evie finally says, “Eli, don’t look now, but Cam is shirtless behind you, and oh my god, that body…”
I freeze at Evie’s words, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. Cam is shirtless behind me? Part of me wants to whirl around and swoon at the sight like every other female in the pack, but another part is terrified of what I might feel if I do.
…but I’m not strong enough to listen to that last part.
Without wasting another moment, I turn around to find out what Cam looks like underneath the hot son. The view is better than any fantasy I’ve had this week.
ACam, in all his shirtless glory, is laughing and joking with his friends by the pool while looking like a God. My mouth goes dry as I take in the sight of his dark, muscular chest and chiseled abs. He looks like a forbidden fantasy come to life, like a main character from a romance novel, and I’m all here for it. I seriously can’t tear my eyes away.
As if sensing my gaze, Cam’s head turns in my direction, and I almost drop my drink. As the pack’s new Alpha, it’s not just his physique that has me mesmerized. It’s the way he carries himself with such confidence and ease like he knows the effect he has on people.
“He is so gorgeous…” Evie murmurs, and I can’t say I disagree with her.
Cam is drop-dead-gorgeous, and when his smile transforms into a knowing smirk, I struggle to inhale enough oxygen to prevent myself from passing out.
I peel my eyes off the guy, not even when he steps towards me. I’m too darn captivated by him, but when I realize he is taking my staring contest as an invitation to come over, I panic. Is he going to come over here to hang out? What will I say? What will I do?!
My heart pounds faster and faster, but before Cam can take another step, one of his friends claps him on the shoulder, breaking the spell. Cam blinks, shaking his head as if to clear it. He shoots me one last look before turning back to his laughing buddies, which is a huge relief.
For a second there, I thought I was going to die from the intensity of my stepbrother’s stare! It was like he could see into my perverted soul. And the worst part? I liked it. A lot.
“Wow,” Evie breathes out beside me. “The sexual tension between you two is off the charts! If he doesn’t turn out to be your fated mate at midnight, I’ll eat my own foot.”
Clara snorts. “Graphic, but accurate. Seriously though, Eli, are you okay? You look a little…flustered.”
I take a large gulp of my drink, welcoming the burn of the alcohol down my throat. “I’m fine.”
Clara raises an eyebrow. “Uh-huh. Sure you are. Look, it’s okay to be attracted to him, Eli. Fated mate or not, Cam is a fine specimen of a man.”

“Can we please not talk about how fine my stepbrother is?” I groan.

Evie giggles. “Don’t be such a prude, Eli! It’s perfectly natural to appreciate a good-looking guy, even if he is technically family. I mean, you two aren’t related by blood, so it’s not like it’s incest or anything.”
I nearly choke on my drink at Evie’s blunt words. “Evie! Could you maybe not say things like ‘incest’ so loudly? People might get the wrong idea.”
Clara chuckles, patting my back as I cough. “Relax, Eli. No one is paying attention to us. They’re all too busy ogling Cam and his friends.”
As if to prove her point, a group of giggling girls walk by, openly gawking at Cam. I feel an irrational surge of jealousy watching them fawn over him. Which is ridiculous because Cam isn’t mine. He’s my stepbrother, for moon’s sake!
Evie notices my glare and smirks. “Down, girl. No need to go all green-eyed monster on those poor girls. Cam only has eyes for you, it seems.”
“No, he doesn’t,” I mutter, tearing my gaze away from Cam’s glistening, muscular back. “He’s just…confused. This whole ‘your fated mate is dying’ thing has him looking at me differently, that’s all.”
Both sisters freeze up before exchanging a glance with each other. I can tell that my werewolf cancer worries them, but none of them want to bring it up and make it a conversation, not today.
Clara sighs, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Eli, I know this is all really confusing and scary. But don’t write off Cam’s feelings just because of the mate situation. From what I saw, that boy is totally into you, destiny or not.”
I bite my lip, uncertainty swirling inside me. “You really think so?”
Evie nods enthusiastically. “Totally! The way he was eye-banging you just now? That’s not the look of a confused stepbrother. That’s the look of a man who wants to devour you whole.”
“Evie!” Clara scolds while I blush.
Is it true? Is Cam attracted to me physically? The thought sends a thrill down my spine since it’s a nice feeling to be wanted, but it’s quickly followed by a stab of guilt.
“Even if he does feel something,” I say quietly, “pursuing it wouldn’t be fair to him. Not with my…condition.”
Evie’s face falls and Clara squeezes my shoulder in sympathy. “Oh, Eli. You can’t think like that. You deserve love and happiness, no matter what the future holds.”
I hear what Clara is saying, but since I don’t fully agree with her, my chest tightens until it gets damn near impossible to breathe. If I turn out to be Cam’s mate, then the moon goddess is the most cruel goddess ever because what’s the point in pairing us up if I’m going to die?!
Suddenly, my head hurts, and when I speak, I sound awfully close to tears, “I just don’t want to hurt him. If we get involved and then I…if something happens to me…it would destroy him.”
