Eli

This is probably when I should tell Cam to back off. He is my stepbrother, for moon goddess’ sake, but… Instead, I feel oddly warm. Something inside of me is purring and I have to actually force myself to remove my hand.
“Cam, what…what are you doing?” I ask even though I know exactly what he is doing: arousing me behind my wildest fucking dreams. Seriously, why am I so drawn to him?!
What makes it worse is that Cam’s smile doesn’t falter. If anything, he grows even more mischievous, and I need a head evaluation because I find his cockiness sexy.
“Just being honest. You wanted to know how I feel about the possibility of you being my mate. Well, there you have it.”
“But we’re… we’re stepsiblings,” I whisper, unsure why I’m even fighting it at this point.
“Does it matter?” Cam challenges, taking a step towards me. I instinctively back up, but he keeps advancing until my back is against the wall of the mansion. I’m cornered like an animal, and Cam bends down so that we are eye-to-eye when he speaks again, “The moon goddess chooses our mates, Eli. If she picks you for me, who are we to argue?”
I stare at him. Cam is so close that it would be easy to kiss him…wait, why am I thinking about kissing him? I should get the hell away from him before-
DONG! DONG!
Everyone turns their heads towards the church and its clonking bell. It’s midnight, and a chorus of excited whispers travels through the flock of people in our garden.
“It’s midnight!” someone who is floating in the pool says excitedly to their friends.
A girl on a sun bed places her phone on her chest. “That means our Alpha can finally find his mate!”
“Who will it be?”
More people start talking among themselves, some staring at Cam, who is looking over his shoulder with his heart beating fast in his chest. I listen to it for a few excruciating moments before he finally turns his head in my direction. He doesn’t dare to look down, though. Instead, he keeps his eyes locked on the wall above my head, and since he is so tall, I can’t make him look at me by force, either.
The only thing I can do is roll my eyes and pretend to be tough even though I’m close to nobbling my own bottom lip. “Just look down and get it over with already. No need to make it so dramatic…”
Cam breathes a laugh. “You mean you don’t feel it already?”
My earlier boldness is replaced with a furiously beating heart. “Feel what?” I whisper, though deep down, I already know the answer.

Cam finally lowers his gaze to meet mine, and the intensity in his eyes steals my breath away. “The pull,” his lips curl by the corners to reveal dimples he sure as hell didn’t have back when we were kids. “You’re my mate, Eli.”
I gawk at him, and he grins in return-something which should be TOTALLY forbidden. My heart speeds up even more at the scandalously sexy face he is making. Doesn’t he understand that every female wolf would want to undress him if he looked at them with those bedroom eyes?
My pulse hammers against my neck at the thought of sex, but before things can get completely out of hand, I grab his arm to pull him inside the house. He lets me. In fact he seems way too happy about me dragging him through the living room to then push his big frame into the bathroom.
I lock the door behind us, and Cam laughs. “I didn’t know you were this forward.”
“This forward…? Oh my god, Cam!” I turn around to face him, beet red in the face. “I didn’t take you here to mark you as mine!”
“No?” he sounds disappointed.
“No!” I repeat. “This isn’t some erotic novel where I throw myself directly at you the second I find out you’re my mate. I’m too classy for that!”
Cam pouts. “Or maybe you don’t want me…”
“No-no-no, I want you, but…wait, why are you looking at me like that?”
Cam, who is grinning like the Cheshire Cat, asks in an innocent voice, “Like what?”
I, however, am not falling for him playing coy. “Oh, don’t you give me that! We both know what you’re doing!”
He laughs. “And what am I doing?”
“Obviously, using your werewolf Alpha magic to make me want you!”
He laughs again, louder this time. “You really think it’s me doing something to you?”
“Uh, yes?”
His smile is freaking dazzling. “It’s not. If you want me now, then I hate to break it to you, but you always
wanted me.”
“What? No! That isn’t true!”
He makes a funny face and shrugs. “I don’t make the rules. I just know that the mate bond doesn’t magically make you aroused, Eli-it amplifies what was already there and makes it damn near impossible to ignore.”
What he is saying is true-I know that much-but accepting it doesn’t come easily to me.
“What are you saying? That I’ve been secretly lusting after you this whole time?”

Chapter 115
Cam’s grin widens. “Maybe not consciously, but on some level? Yeah, I think you have been.”
I shake my head vehemently. “No, that’s impossible. You’re my stepbrother! I couldn’t have…

“Couldn’t have what? Wanted me?” Cam takes a step towards me, his large frame crowding me against the bathroom door. “Because if I remember correctly, you’re the one who straddled me in the kitchen the other day.”
“I was just showing you that I could take you in a fight…wait a minute! If I can’t beat Lautner, then that means -“I gasp. “Oh my god, you let me tackle you to the floor!”
Unlike yesterday, Cam doesn’t blush. He isn’t overly flirtatious, but the grin he gives me is wicked.
I gape at him, my cheeks flaming. “You…you devious…ugh!” I smack his chest, which only makes him laugh.
“Hey, I didn’t plan on letting you win! You shocked me, and when you were on top, I…I couldn’t push you away. Do you even realize how irresistible you are when you smile?”
My heart does a little flip at his words, but I try to keep my composure. “This is insane. We can’t…I mean, we’re family… I will have to reject you!”
“No!” Cam exclaims and takes my hands in his larger ones. When I lift my head, he is giving me puppy eyes. “Don’t reject me just because we grew up together, Eli. We aren’t related by blood, and technically, we wouldn’t be worse than childhood friends who end up together.”
I stare up into his green, earnest eyes, my resolve crumbling. “But what about my illness? I don’t want to be a burden to you, Cam.”
Pain flashes across his handsome features. “You could never be a burden to me. I want to be there for you, Eli, in sickness and in health. As your mate, it’s my job to take care of you.”
“You really mean that?”
“With all my heart.” He leans down, resting his forehead against mine. “Look, I know that we are a new item and that you’re insecure because we are stepsiblings and that I’m the Alpha and younger than you—”
“Fuck, I had forgotten about that part!”
Cam wrinkles his nose. “Okay, how about we forget about that part?”
“How am I supposed to forget that part?” I let go of his hands and step back, running a hand over my face while pacing the large bathroom. “Cam, you’re eighteen while I’m twenty-three. You’re basically a baby compared-”
“Do I look like a baby to you?!”
I spin around to face Cam, my eyes widening as I take in his tall, muscular form. He’s right – he definitely doesn’t look like a baby. In fact, with his chiseled features, broad shoulders, and the way his swim trunks cling to his powerful thighs, he looks every inch the virile Alpha male.
“No,” I admit grudgingly. “You don’t look like a baby. But that doesn’t change the fact that you’re barely legal,

Cam rolls his eyes. “Five years, Eli. There’s only a five-year age gap between us. It’s not that big of a deal.”
“Maybe not to you! But I feel like a cradle robber,” I mutter.
He steps closer, his eyes burning into mine. “Trust me, you’re not robbing any cradles here. I’m a man, Eli. Your man. Your mate. And I want you, age difference be damned.”
My breath hitches at the possessive growl in his voice. The rational part of my brain is screaming at me to shut this down, to remind Cam that we’re stepsiblings and the age gap is inappropriate. But the other part, the part that’s basking in the glow of our newly discovered mate bond, is purring in delight at his words.
“Cam…” I whisper, my resolve weakening as he crowds me against the sink.
“Tell me you don’t want me with a straight face, and I’ll back off right now,” Cam challenges, his eyes boring into mine. “But if you can’t do that, then stop fighting this, Eli. Stop fighting us.”
I open my mouth to protest, to tell him that, of course, I don’t want him like that, but the words stick in my throat. Because as much as I hate to admit it, Cam is right. I do want him. I’ve always wanted him on some deep, primal level that I’ve tried to ignore.
My silence stretches on, and Cam’s lips curve into a knowing smirk. “That’s what I thought.”
Before I can muster a retort, he leans down to kiss me, but I press my palm to his lips. “Stop.” Cam immediately freezes, and I give him a strained smile. “You win, Cam. I want you, but…could we please slow down a bit?”
Cam repeatedly blinks before his nostrils flare. I take that as a sign he has heard me and back up from him. He might not look happy, but at least he isn’t kissing me. And no, it isn’t that I don’t want him kissing me, but kissing him is dangerous-it could lead to me having more feelings for him when I shouldn’t be falling in love. I have an illness, and love is wasted on me, but I know Cam doesn’t see it that way.
“Fine,” he mutters. “We can go slow.”
Wait, what?
Is he agreeing with me?!
I smile. “Really? You’re up for going slow?”
“I am,” he looks me up and down and sighs before closing the distance and picking me up in a fireman carry. He does it so quickly I have no chance of escaping. The only thing I can do is shriek like a frightened girl.
“Wh-what are you doing?!”
He ignores me trying to fight him and walks for the door as if I were just a sack of potatoes on his shoulders. “If I can’t kiss my future wife, I have to find other ways to bond with her, and I think I will start by sharing a bed with you.”
