I gasp as Cam carries me out of the bathroom and towards the stairs, my fists pounding on his muscular back. “Cam! Put me down right now! This isn’t what I meant by going slow!”
My behemoth of a stepbrother says nothing. He doesn’t even slow down when we pass people getting drinks inside the mansion. If anything, he hurries his pace until we are on the top floor. It’s then I realize there’s no escaping him, and my whole face turns crimson when we pass by a window and I see Clara and Evie staring up at us.
“Great…” I mutter. “Now, my friends will talk about this for ages. We’re practically acting like we’re a romantic couple from a book!”
“And what’s wrong with that?” Cam asks in a sullen voice. “I happen to like romantic movies and books…”
That gives me pause. “You do?” I’m so shocked that I forget to be nervous. Instead, I’m blinking up at the giant who’s currently taking me inside his room.
“Y-yeah. I actually have plenty of romance novels on my bookshelf inside my room. It’s a secret from the other pack members, though…”
…is it just me, or did Cam just sound shy? Not in a “red in the face” kind of way, but in a grumpy way that I find oddly endearing.
Cam gently deposits me on his king-sized bed before shutting the door. When he turns around, there’s a bashful expression on his face that’s at odds with his earlier bravado.
“I know it’s not very Alpha-like to enjoy romance stories,” he admits, rubbing the back of his neck. “But I can’t help it. There’s just something about the idea of finding your soulmate, your perfect match, that appeals to
me.”
My heart melts a little at his confession. Who knew the big, tough Alpha had such a soft side?
“That’s actually really sweet, Cam,” I say softly. “And for the record, I think it’s sexy when a man isn’t afraid to embrace his romantic side.”
His green eyes light up, and I’m happy when the dimples from earlier makes a reappearance. “Yeah?”
“Yup.”
Cam gets so happy hearing my answer that I’m soon attacked by the Alpha more than twice my size. It only takes a second for him to hug my little body to his larger and warmer, shirtless body.
And what a body it is! I’m so amazed by his carved muscles and amazing abs that I don’t fight back. I just sit there like an idiot while my face gets smothered by his massive chest before I’m pulled into his lap with surprising ease.
When did my little stepbrother get so strong?

…and why do I find our size difference arousing?

It’s actually crazy how small I feel once I’m sitting in Cam’s lap with his arms wrapped around me. It makes me realize that my mate is huge-both in height and muscles-and shivers prickle over my skin when he presses his nose against the side of my neck to inhale my scent deeply.
“Your scent is sweet, just like you,” he murmurs. “Maybe I should start calling you sugar?”
My pulse quickens, my body responding to his nearness and the nickname despite my earlier reservations. Cam sees that as an invitation to lick my pulse, which does nothing to calm my racing heart.
“Cam…please…” I whisper, not sure if I’m protesting or encouraging him.
Cam seems curious, too, and presses his lips against my neck before asking in a deep voice, “Please, what?”
My answer is to let out a slow, deep breath, and Cam releases a low, humorless laugh before whispering, “I’m going to back off, but you should know that while I know you said you wanted to take things slow, it’s taking every ounce of my control not to claim you right here and now.”
I swallow hard at his words, closing my eyes as if that will somehow stop the wetness from spreading between my legs. Truthfully, I want him to go further-to kiss me, bite me, lick my nipples until I’m writhing and moaning in need. My whole body and soul are praying for that to happen, but to my utter disappointment, he backs off and collapses on the other side of the bed.
“You don’t have to stay if you don’t want to, but I would like it if you did.”
His voice is shockingly sweet so I turn around to stare at him in confusion. He couldn’t possibly mean that, right?
“You want me to stay even if there’s no sex?” I sound as suspicious as I feel.
Cam tries not to laugh at whatever face I’m making. “Is that so hard to believe?”
“Uh, yes?” I blink repeatedly. “I mean, you’re a guy who just turned eighteen, so…” You’re probably hornier than shit, is what I want to say, but I don’t. Cam seems to understand what I’m saying without saying it, though.
There’s a smile playing on his lips as he looks up at me from the pillow beside me. “I’m not making it up, Eli. I’ve always wanted to sleep next to my mate and wake up beside them. If you stay, you’re making one of my dreams come true.”
This man is really too sweet for his own good! How am I supposed to leave knowing that?!
With a blush on my face, I reach for the blanket to pull it over my legs. I won’t get naked, but I won’t leave poor Cam alone, either. How could I? He is my mate, and if a sleepover is what he wants, then a sleepover is what my mate will get.
“I’m staying.”
Even if I’m not looking at Cam, I know that he is smiling after hearing I won’t leave him. I can feel it, and soon, I can also hear that smile in his voice: “Thank you.”
