I stared at him blankly, waiting for him to burst into a fit of laughter, and then informed me that it was a prank, but that didn’t seem to be coming.

I blinked once. Twice. His eyes searched mine as if waiting for a response, and I withdrew my hands from his grip hesitantly.

“Erm… I can… I mean, thank you, but I’m fine with eating at home,” I forced out a smile.

His smile dropped. “Come on, I came all the way here to ask you out for lunch. You’re not just going to turn me down, right?”

I bit the corner of my mouth as I contemplated what excuse to give him next.

“Aren’t you bored of staying at home? It’s

the weekend and all you do is stay in this big house alone,” he said with a frown. “Or is it me you don’t want to hang out with?”

I didn’t expect him to find offense in it, but from the way his smile faltered, I could tell he felt hurt.

“I…” inhaled sharply before speaking again. “Even if I wanted to follow you, I’ll have to inform Kael first, and I don’t know where he is or the maids-”

The corner of his lips turned up ever so slightly as he held my hands again. “You don’t need anyone’s permission to go out with me. I don’t remember Kael telling what he’s up to, so why must you report your activities to him?”

I shook my head, but he didn’t stop. “You’re not a prisoner, Nev. You’re your own person.”

I knew he was right. I didn’t need Kael’s permission to go out or anyone else. He probably wouldn’t even notice I was gone, and I was indeed bored with staying in the huge mansion without having anyone to talk to, so I nodded hesitantly.

“Fine. Give me a moment to change into something better,” I said, but before I could leave, he pulled me back.

“You meant to say you want to change into one of those hideous gowns again?” He chuckled lightly. “You look perfect in this,

Nev.”

His eyes scanned my body as he spoke, and I couldn’t help but feel exposed. The dress highlighted every inch of my shape, and the last time I went out dressed, it didn’t end well for me. It was a risk I wasn’t ready to take again.

“I-I don’t feel comfortable in it,” my face flushed red from embarassment as I looked away.

“Trust me, you look great in it,” he assured me. “You’ll be by my side the entire time. So you have nothing to worry about, and I promise to bring you back safely.”

He was pretty convincing. I ended up agreeing to it, and he gave me his signature smile.

He drove us to a burger shop. I didn’t expect it to be so crowded but it seems as though everyone in the neighborhood was present. Travis didn’t seem to care about being spotted with but I couldn’t help but turn each time I saw a familiar face.

If Travis noticed this, he didn’t comment on it.

He joined the queue to place an order, and in less than two minutes after we arrived, he came back with two burgers and fries with our drink.

“How did you do that?” My eyes widened as I looked back at the ong queue, which didn’t even seem to be moving

“Easy. Flash the girls a wink, and they’d swoon away,” he winked me, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

Travis was hot, no doubt. I didn’t think there was anyone in Kac circle that girls wouldn’t kill for anyway. It was like they assessed each other and picked the hottest boys to form a group of friends.

Girls literally worship them in school and would die to get their attention. What I didn’t expect was how easy it was for them to get away with things even outside school.

“No wonder Kael could bring some random girl home.” A bitter voice said in my head, and I pushed the thought away before it could linger.

Travis seemed to be really cool, compared to the impression I had of him. He was so carefree. We spoke about sports. movies, and books, and I was just surprised to know he has this side of him.

I’ve seen him laughing with his friends and all, but he never really spared anyone below his status a glance, which was literally half of the school. Why was he nice to me again?

After what happened with Mary, I couldn’t help but think this was some kind of prank. I looked around to check for the hidden camera, but I didn’t notice any.

His eyes followed mine, and when he didn’t notice anything strange, he arched his brows. “Is everything okay? You seemed pretty distracted.”

Oh, and he is observant too.

“Can I be honest with you?” I bit my lower lip, and a small frown formed on my lips.

“You don’t like it here? I noticed the way you’ve been looking around since we got here. Are you afraid someone will see us together?” His voice dropped, and I shook my head quickly before he’d misunderstand the whole thing.

“No. No. That’s not it,” I said, and his shoulder visibly relaxed. Why did he care about that anyway?

“So what is it?” His piercing eyes locked on mine, and I inhaled sharply.

“It’s just that I found it strange that you’re being nice to me when everyone else in school hates me and treats me like some kind of plague.”

A smile curved his lips. He held my hands, taking me by surprise but I didn’t pull away. “I don’t hate you, Nev. I don’t have any reason to. I may not have been exactly nice in the beginning but that was because I barely even knew you, not because I hated you.”

His words sounded so genuine, and I wanted to believe them, bu I couldn’t stop the question that kept popping into my head.

“But Kael hates me, and he’s your best friend,” I pointed out.

“He might be my best friend, but we have our differences, and if you haven’t noticed, I’m not one to follow others blindly.”

I knew Travis had a strong personality and did whatever he wanted, but was that enough reason to trust him? I tried trusting someone once, and that almost got me into big trouble.

On the other hand, Travis has been nothing but nice to me. He en kept my secret about staying in the pack house. Although I think that must have something to do with Kael, like he said, he could go against Kael, and nothing would happen, so maybe he kept it a secret because he cared?

“You can trust me, you know?” Travis said, snapping me out of ry trance. “I just find you really cool, but you avoid me at any chance you get, and I hope that’d stop.”

“Sure.”

to him. I laughed at all the jokes he shared, and I liked I wasn’t comfortable with.

“How about we take a walk? We’ve been sitting down for a while, Travis suggested, and I nodded.

We walked to the park down the street, and even though he was just making kind gestures, it kind of felt like a date.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself,” a voice snapped in my head.

The weather was getting chill, and I knew it was my cue to go home.

“The last time I came here with the boys, we had a lot of fun,” Travis grinned as he ate his ice cream. I felt guilty for cutting the moment short, but I didn’t like staying out late. I already broke a record today.

“Can we head back now?”

He turned to face me, and a sheepy smile tugged his lips. “I enjoyed talking to you. Didn’t even realize it was getting late.”

He rose to his feet, dusting his butt as he helped me up. “I’ll take you home as promised, but I need to take you to one more place.”

I shook my head before he could even complete his words. “It’s getting late, I should be on my way now.”

“Come on, Nev. We both know there’s no one at home that’d question you even if you arrived late, and I promise to take you back safely.”

I wanted to argue with him, but I found myself agreeing reluctantly. It’s not like I had anything to do anyway, plus it’d be just this once.

Travis drove us to the said special place. My blood ran cold as soon as I figured it was a club.

“I-I can’t go in,” I whimpered and Travis smiled. He seemed to have expected that from me, but I really can’t. I still have a month before I’d turn eighteen and I don’t even have a fake ID. What if I get caught?

“Do you trust me?” Travis asked. Even though a part of me wanted to yell out NO, I followed him in like a lost puppet and no one bothered to stop us the moment they spotted Travis.

“See? I told you not to worry.”

We were immediately welcomed by the loud jam bursting through the air. We pushed our way through the sweaty bodies on the dance floor and I was surprised to see the amount of underage kids that were present.

I looked up to see who it was, and my body went still.

Kael sat in the middle of two ladies who clung unto him like he was the air they breathe, but he didn’t seem to mind.

His eyes darkened, and I could sense his muscles clenched from where I stood I swallowed hard, looking away when I noticed their entire team members were present.

Travis greeted them with a smile, and when he noticed I was no longer moving, he wrapped his hands around my waist, and my body tensed.

“Guys, I’m sure you all know Nev,” he said, drawing their attention to me. A cold chill ran down my spine as Kael grabbed his drink and took a long sip.

His eyes never left mine and I wished I could tell what was going through his head. I tried to break free from Travis when he spoke again.

“She’s here as my date.”

Kael drew his brows together and I could taste the bitterness in my throat
