It’s been a week since I returned home and Nevaeh was nowhere to be found. My father had insisted that I attend the council meeting tour with him to prepare ahead for my future responsibilities and get familiar with things.

It was one of the reasons why he was so thrilled about my coming-of-age ceremony. Because he’d finally have someone to share his responsibility with and now, he wouldn’t stop dragging me everywhere with him, all in the name of learning things properly.

When we got back home, it was already late so I didn’t bother to go check on her, thinking she must have gone to bed until I heard the maids whispering in the kitchen.

“I’m so jealous, she chose to be with Damon when she already has the backing of Alpha here. She’s such a wise girl. No one would dare to mess with her now.”

They spoke in a hushed tone. My body went still at the mention of Damon. I pushed the door open, making them jump from the force.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded.

The two looked at each other shakingly, looking everywhere but my eyes, and I could feel a storm raging in the pit of my stomach. “Who the fuck are you talking about?!” I snapped and they began to stammer.

“I-1 we… It’s Nevaeh…” one of them said, shifting her weight from one leg to another nervously as the other fiddled with her nails.

“What do you mean she chose Damon? What the hell are you talking about?”

“She left with him earlier!” One of them said quickly.

“Y-yes, she said she wanted to start all over again in his pack, so she left.”

My heart dropped as I stared at the maids blankly. She left with Him? Damon? The maids hurried out of the kitchen leaving me dumbfounded for a while, but I refused to believe what they had said.

I barged into her room in search of her. I didn’t care if my father saw me or not, but I needed an explanation. I needed to know if what the maids had said was lies.

My stomach churned as I turned the doorknob and pushed the door open, only to meet with an empty room. Her bed was made but it didn’t look like anyone had slept on it. My heart skipped a beat as I opened her closet, and the scanty clothes that were in there were all the confirmation that I needed.

She was gone.

She didn’t even drop a note for me or bother to give me a reason before she disappeared. My hands curled into a fist as a low chuckle escaped my lips.

No, it’s not possible.

Nevaeh wouldn’t leave just like that. She hated the idea of marrying Damon. She didn’t have to say it because it was all written in her eyes. I saw how uncomfortable she was around him the last time he came here so there was no way she’d willingly move to his place. There has to be something someones not telling me.

I shook my head, convinced that she’d be back soon, but a few days had passed and she still hadn’t returned.

My mind had been distracted and all I could think about was Neach. She wouldn’t leave just like that. She didn’t have a reason to. Why would she choose to stay with Damon of all people? Why would she choose him?

A part of me wanted to believe that she’d come back because this was where she rightfully belonged. With me. By my side. But I also knew there was a very high chance that she wanted to get away from me after what happened at the cave.

I marked her. That was enough to condemn her to death if father or anyone in the council ever found out. Of course, she’d leave and it’s all on me for pushing her away because I couldn’t strain myself.

Fuck.

I punched the wall hard until my knuckles burst. Blood trickled down my hands, but the pain was nothing compared to the thought of losing Nevaeh forever.

I wanted to go to Damon’s pack and drive her out of there. I found myself sniffing her clothes, inhaling her scent because that was her much I missed her. I wanted to have her wrapped around my arms so badly that I had considered going to Damon’s place at least a thousand times, but not only would that be reckless, I’d be putting her in a lot of trouble, again.

I can get away with anything. After all, I was the future Alpha, bu Nevaeh? She has no one and I have to protect her.

My father sent a maid to ask me to join him for breakfast. As soon as I joined him, I wished I hadn’t. Rose sat there with a stupid smile on her face, and I hated her more for bringing that useless suggestion in the first place.

If she hadn’t tried to marry Nevaeh off to Damon, she would have never left this place. She wouldn’t have had anywhere to go, and she’d still be by my side.

I didn’t know how my father could breathe in the same air with someone as terrible as she was. I pushed the chair back, leaving a screeching noise, as the maids dished my food.

The clattering of plates filled the air with every sound they made and my gaze dropped to Nevaeh’s empty seat.

“I heard you haven’t gone for your suit fitting,” Father said, snapping me out of my trance. “The mating ceremony is tomorrow and you have to look your best, remember? Dressing ells a lot about someone and as an Alpha, you need to always look smart.”

I had almost forgotten about the mating ceremony because Nevaeh was all I could think of, but I didn’t argue with him. Maybe this was my chance to see Nevaeh again.

I knew Damon would show up for certain, and that scumbag would likely bring her along to spite me. My chest tightened at the thought of relying on someone’s action just to see her again, but that was the only choice I had left.

My grip tightened around the fork at the thought of Damon laying his hand on her. This was all her mother’s fault. I shot her a look and the urge to hurt someone had never been stronger.

“I’ll do something about it,” I dropped the fork with a click befor I did something I’d regret before storming out of the dining room.

I sat down at the balcony, staring into the sky, and I couldn’t het but wonder how Nevach was doing. It’s no news that Damon was a big asshole, and I have seen how he treated wome but he wouldn’t hurt her, right?

I ran my hands through my head. I hated being helpless and that was exactly how I felt right now. I vowed to protect her. Why couldn’t she believe me?

The sounds of heels clicked behind me, and I turned slightly toe who it was. My blood boiled once I noticed it was Nevaeh’s mother, and my jaw clenched.

“Here you are,” she spoke softly, smiling down at me. If I hadn’ten the way she speaks to her own child, I’d think maybe she was really innocent, but this was the woman who said she would kill her daughter if she had to.

Nothing in this world could make me fall for her tricks, and I hope the spell she cast on my father would wear off soon so

that he could see the bitch he has been keeping close.

“I know how scary commitment sounds, and that is what a mating ceremony is all about. Commitment.”

“And you’d know so much about it, huh?” My hands curled into fist and it took every single restraint in my body to grab her hair and teach a lesson she’d never forget.

“Listen, pretending to be my mother wouldn’t make you one. You’d never be anything more than my father’s mistress and I’d be here when he finally came to his senses and threw you out

She had never looked so relaxed when she spoke to Nevaeh, but because she was so desperate to make me like her, she forced out a smile as before speaking again. If only she extended the same grace to her own daughter.

“Change is a lot… even I know that-”

“Of course, you do,” I scoffed at her words. “How about you focus on becoming a good mother, rather than chasing after a man that only sees you as a tool to warm his bed?”

Her face flashed with hurt, but since when did I care about a bitch like her?

“Stop wasting your time trying to gain his love because he buried his heart the day he buried my mother. Not you or anyone else in the world can make him fall in love again, so why don’t you give up already?”

“That is not a way to speak to an elderly person,” she snapped, finally showing her true color. “I’m married to your father and it’s about time you accord me some respect.”

Her eyes flared with rage, and I couldn’t help but scoff at her reaction. “I owe no respect to murderers. I know you killed your first husband, and I’m going to expose the truth to everyone, especially my father.”

She gasped in disbelief, stumbling backward and I tutted at her reaction. She didn’t even blink when she told Nevaeh, and now she was acting like she had just seen a ghost?

She parted her lips, but no words could come out.

“Stay the hell away from Nevaeh and stop trying so hard to control her life or I won’t only reveal your crimes, I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your miserable life locked up.”
