NEVAEH

My mother’s hands hung in the air, but for some weird reason, she didn’t connect it with my cheeks like it had expected. Her hands shook as she brought them to her waist reluctantly, but she didn’t stop glaring at me.

I didn’t understand why she looked so timid in front of Kael. She didn’t have any problem unleashing her wrath on me just a second ago. How come she became quiet in front of Kael?

Even though he was the future Alpha and she had been trying so hard to get on his good side, that is not enough reason to look… intimidated.

Kael stepped into the room, shutting the door behind him, and my eyes drifted between Kael and my mother. Am I missing something?

My mother took a step back as Kael lurched forward, hands curled into a fist, but I didn’t dare to ask what the tension was all about. Not in front of my mother.

“It’s only a matter of time before your Father sees the video, and once he did, he won’t only kick Nevaeh out for causing all this trouble, he’d also be livid at you for defiling the rules and not mating with Sabrina,” she said through a gritted teeth.

My head snapped up to Kael, who was busy glaring at my mother to pay me any attention. He didn’t mark Sabrina? How is that possible? I saw the mark on her neck when she flaunted it in front of the elders. Was it all a lie?

Kael’s face remained unreadable, and I wondered how my mother got this information. As if she could read my thoughts, she spoke again.

“Sabrina mentioned it while she was being recorded, and half of the pack knows that now. How do you intend to take care of that?”

Kael’s jaw ticked, but he didn’t reply to her words. I couldn’t tell if my mother was trying to brainwash him to kick me out himself or not, so I just watched them quietly.

She took his silence as her hint to continue. I saw the fake concern on her face as she pretended to be worried about Kael’s reputation when, in fact, the only person she cared about was herself, and her next words just proved me right.

“If Neveah is willing to return to the street, then that is her business, but I’m not returning to that miserable life now that I have finally escaped it.”

Kael’s face twitched into a scowl as he stepped closer to my mother. He grabbed her arms roughly, yanking her closer. I gasped from how harsh he was doing, even though I knew my mother didn’t deserve my pity.

“You’d better keep your end of the deal if you don’t want to lose your neck,” he threatened my mother, and she swallowed hard, nodding vehemently.

Deal? What deal are they talking about? Neither of them seemed to care that I was in the room, and I couldn’t help but wonder what deal my mother could have possibly made with Kael.

“If you don’t do everything to stop my father from seeing the video and he took any action against us, I’ll also reveal everything about your past, so how about you tell me which one is more important?”

My mother went pale as she swallowed hard. Her hands fiddled against her dress, and watching her like this almost made me laugh. She did everything just so people wouldn’t look down on her anymore, but even knowing that she was married to the Alpha, no one seemed to give her that respect.

Kael inched closer, and I could barely recognize the man that stood in front of me. “Can you imagine what my father would do once he finds out everything you did just to be with him? I wondered who would get kicked out

first. You or Neveah.”

I could have sworn I saw fear flashed across my mother’s eyes. Her lips quivered, but she couldn’t make out

any sound. She always looks so fierce while talking to me and seeing her like this… I didn’t even know what to

think.

I knew my mother had many dirty secrets. Most of which people would stone her to death if they ever find out, but what could Kael possibly have against her to have her under his control.

I looked between the two, wondering what could make my mother suddenly obedient, but then again, anyone could easily get intimidated by Kael especially when he’s using his Alpha aura.

“I think it’s too late,” mother let out a sharp breath. “There is no way I could stop him from seeing the video now. It is everywhere-” she ran her hands in her hair and I could tell how frustrated she had become. “Even if I tried, what if someone calls him to inform him? What is going to happen then?”

“Stop giving excuses and come up with something already!” Kael snapped at her, taking me by surprise. I have never seen him so pissed or even directing his anger at anyone else but me, which made this side of him even more shocking.

There was a time I thought he wasn’t capable of getting mad at others but me. He’d laugh with his teammates, flirt with the ladies and ignore everyone else except when it came to me, but watching him intimidate my mother was another thing entirely.

“Isn’t that all you ever do?” He asked through gritted teeth. “Plotting useless things? Use that dumb skill of yours to come up with something and you better start thinking now.”

Her eyes glistened with fear and anger. My mother was big on respect and seeing someone like Kael disrespecting her must have riled her up to the bone. She shook her head, and I have a feeling she was biting back her words. Jaw clenched beside her as she stormed out of the room angrily.

She snapped the door shut behind her and I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. The room fell silent as soon as Kael and I were left alone, and I wondered if I should ask him what was going on between him and my mother or if I should just mind my business.

He took a step closer to me and my breath hitched for some weird reasons. I wasn’t scared of him or anything, at least not anymore, but after watching him talk to my mother in that manner, I wondered if he’d transfer his aggression to me.

He finally stopped in front of me. I opened my mouth to break the silence, but before I could even think of what to say, he grabbed my neck and tilted it up to see my wound.

I hissed from the pain that shot through my body. He grazed the spot, careful not to hurt me in the process and my breath caught.

His eyes bore into mine and I watched them softening as he spoke. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to stop Sabrina on time.”

Hearing Kael apologize to me felt surreal. It was something I thought I’d never experience, not in this lifetime, but here he was, apologizing to me like he meant it.

Different questions popped in my head and I wanted to know why he made me believe he marked Sabrina when I accused him. Was it all a lie? Did Sabrina fake the injury on her neck?

Oblivious to my thoughts, Kael cupped my cheeks in his hands, forcing me to look straight into his eyes. “I’m sorry for not protecting you,” he muttered softly this time, and I couldn’t help the pride that swell in my chest.

I shook my head lightly. “You don’t have to apologize for what happened. This is all on Sabrina-” “Maybe that is true, but none of this would have happened if I hadn’t encouraged it,” he whispered. Kael was admitting to his fault, and just listening to his soft voice made my heart melt into jellies.

“I started the whole bullying and everyone simply followed my lead, so there’s no other way to put it. This is all my fault and I sincerely apologize for putting you through all of that.”

My lips curved into a smile, but I didn’t stop him this time. We both knew he was right. I was an ordinary girl in school until I caught his attention and he began to bully me.

I haven’t had a moment of peace ever since, and even though I have long forgiven him, it didn’t make it any

less true.

“I know I can never make up for what has been done, but I’ll try my best to fix it.” He withdrew his hands from my cheeks, and I missed his warmth immediately.

He held my hands, his eyes never leaving mine as he continued.

“Speaking of which. I’d like to take you somewhere tonight,” he muttered, and my curiosity kicked in.

“Where is that?”

“It’s a secret.”

Goddess knows how much I hated hearing that. I became even more curious and pleaded with him to tell me already, but he only chuckled at my reaction.

“Impatient, huh?”

My cheeks flushed from his words as I recalled what we were doing the last time he told me that. As if he could read my thoughts, he giggled at my expression.

“Get dressed and wait for me downstairs without gaining anyone’s attention. You’d find out soon enough.”
