Chapter 78
Chapter 78
NEVAEH
It was finally the camping day, and I wasn’t looking forward to it one bit. I knew I’d have to take the school bus and watch everyone having the moment of their lives while I hid at a corner.
I wished I could say no to Alpha Zane, or at least my mother should insist that I stay back, but since that was no longer an option, I had to pack my luggage grudgingly.
The school bus was set to leave at nine on the dot. I wondered if I could get Alpha to change his mind if I missed the school bus, but as soon as I went downstairs, my hope vanished into thin air.
“I was just about to ask a maid to come get you,” Alpha Zane said with a smile. I forced out a smile of my own, wondering why he wanted to see me.
“My driver will be the one to drive you and Kael to the camp, so give your luggage to him and do whatever you want now so that you can hit the road early,” he said.
I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry at the arrangement. He tried to separate Kael and I when he noticed we were getting close, and now that I don’t want to be anywhere next to him, he wanted us to go together in the same car.
I headed out to see the car already waiting, and I could tell that it was going to be a long ride. I handed my luggage to the driver and hopped into the car where Kael was already sitting.
He had his eyes glued to his phone screen, completely ignoring me as I took my seat next to him. The strong scent of his cologne hits my nostrils, and I almost inhaled the scent before stopping myself.
“Are you
ready?” The driver turned to Kael as soon as he came.
“Drive,” he commanded without breaking his gaze away from his phone.
I brought out my phone, scrolling through the internet, but all I could see were the exciting videos everyone was making about the trip. I shoved my phone in my bag as I stared out through the window, watching the city blur past, trying to outrun the thousand thoughts clawing at my mind.
The silence was starting to suffocate me when Kael spoke beside me.
“Play music or something,” he muttered, leaning back against the leather.
The driver turned on the radio, but not even the background noise was enough to distract me. I tried to pretend as if he wasn’t sitting right next to me, or if I were to move a little, my legs wouldn’t brush with his.
I snapped my eyes close, trying to force myself to sleep so that the journey could feel less suffocating when the car came to a halt abruptly.
“What is the problem?” Kael asked beside me, but the driver looked just as confused.
“I don’t know…” he muttered under his breath, already releasing his seat belt. “Give me a moment to confirm what is happening.”
The driver stepped out quickly, and I watched as he paced around, opening the car bonnet to find out what went wrong. We were in the middle of nowhere. We can’t turn back now, and if we were to call Alpha to send another car, it’d take about an hour to get to where we are.
Gosh, not today.
I stole a glance at Kael only to find him already staring. “I’m sure it’s nothing serious. You don’t have anything to worry

about,” he assured fine, but as scary as being stranded in the middle of nowhere was, it didn’t sound as bad as being stuck with him does.
I nodded, fidgeting in my seat. I stared out through the window, cursing my luck inwardly, when I felt his hands on my thighs. I flinched from his touch and he retreated his hands immediately.
Staying in the space with him suddenly felt even more awkward, and I knew I had to leave. “I’ll go check what’s going on,” I said, already reaching for the door when he spoke beside me.
“Yes, like you can offer any help?” He sounded pissed, and I wished I could read him for once and figure out what the hell is wrong with him.
“At least it’s better than nothing. Do you have a better idea on how to get us out of here?” I shot back, feeling a surge of rage bubbling in my stomach.
“And going out there will miraculously get the car moving?” He drew his brows together, and honestly, he was starting to rile me up.
“Then do something! Be a man for once and stop making others clean up after your mess,” I snapped before I could stop myself.
We both knew I was no longer talking about the car, but neither of us was ready to address the lingering issue. At least, I knew I was talking about it because it’d rub off the little pride I had left. What about him? Did I really mean nothing to him? Was I just another dumb girl that he used and discarded?
The question kept replaying in my head, and the more I thought about it, the angrier I became.
The car fell silent for a moment and when I figured he wasn’t going to give me a response, I pushed the door open angrily.
He pulled me back into my seat, snapping the door close as he glared at me. “I’ll go and check what’s going on,” he said through gritted teeth.
I didn’t realize how close he was now sitting until his hot breath fanned my skin, awakening every nerve in my body.
My eyes locked with his, and for a moment, my body trembled as his gaze shifted to my lips. I was supposed to hate him for what he did to me, but having him so close made me want to run my hands in his hair, pulling him close until there was no distance left between us.
As if he read my thoughts, he inched closer, lifting my chin up gently, but before our lips could meet, the driver opened the door, and he swung back to his seat so fast, no one could ever imagine what almost happened.
Disappointment clawed in the pit of my stomach as the driver came in with a smile. “Everything is fine now. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting.”
Kael hummed beside me, already staring out through the window while the driver started the car. Watching him pretend as if nothing almost happened between us made me feel even more pathetic.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” A voice cursed in my head. “Why can’t you control yourself around him? He’s not even proud of you. He’s just using you.”
I chewed the inside of my mouth, feeling a new wave of shame as I sat still in the same position.
The rest of the ride was filled with silence. I didn’t dare glance at him or see what he was doing as I just kept staring at the
road.
After what felt like forever, the camp’s gate finally came into view from where we were and I knew this was my cue to leave.
“Stop the car,” I said, breaking the silence. Kael turned to look at me with a confused look on his face, and the driver looked equally surprised.

“Is something wrong?” He asked, staring at me through the front mirror.
“No, everything is fine,” I forced out a smile and it was Kael who spoke this time.
“The camp is still a few minutes walk from here. Why do you want to drop here?”
“I don’t want anyone to know we came here together,” I muttered like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I can’t afford another misunderstanding, and honestly, I’d rather walk than let anyone see us together.”
The last part wasn’t true, but he didn’
have to know that.

He went quiet from my words, and for a second, I could have sworn I saw a flicker of hurt eyes before it was replaced by his usual stoic look.
“Fair enough,” he said coldly, leaning back on his seat. “I wouldn’t want anyone to see me with someone like you anyway.”
His words stung like a bee, but I already knew I met nothing to him, so why do I keep getting hurt by everything he does? Inhaling sharply, I stormed out of the car and slammed the door shut behind me, but he didn’t even wait for me to reconsider before the car zoomed off.
