Third–person POV:
Laila remembered.

Zane was her cousin. Their family didn’t have much talent for combat, so they had spent years doing business outside, rarely returning to Silvermoon Pack and hardly ever appearing around the Royal Court or nearby packs.
He had always worked along the coast. Laila had only seen him once, but the impression stuck because he looked so much like her
father.
Samuel happened to be there as well. The moment he heard, he immediately had people investigate it.”

Half an hour later, the news came back. Frostfang Pack had captured someone today, and it was very likely Zane and his family.
Laila’s expression darkened. Viola’s eyes widened in shock. “Don’t tell me Estelle already knows about our plan?”
Laila shook her head, a restrained fire flickering in her eyes. “No, that’s not it. It’s because of my cousin. He looks a lot like my father when he was young. And he’s in his twenties, young, and he…” She paused. “I’m worried…”
She didn’t finish the sentence, but everyone understood.
Viola snapped, “Estelle is completely insane. Anyone she sets her sights on is really unlucky. What is she trying to do? She already has a mate. Is she planning to force herself on another he–wolf?”
Laila gripped the armrest, tension written all over her face. “The problem is, we move tomorrow night. If we go in tonight to save them, we risk ruining the entire plan and alerting her. But if we don’t…”
She trailed off. Tomorrow was September 28, the day of their operation.
Viola picked up where she left off. “If we wait, there’s too much that can go wrong. We save them now. There’s a pregnant woman and two kids. If they fall into that lunatic’s hands, there’s no way that ends well.”
Zane’s mate was carrying a child.
Samuel fell into thought for a moment before speaking. “There’s another option. I go in alone and keep watch. If Estelle moves against them, I step in. If she doesn’t, I stay hidden and wait for your operation tomorrow night.”
Slipping into Frostfang Pack’s Alpha den without a trace, finding the dungeon, and hiding inside, only Samuel and Laila could puit that off.
And Samuel would be calmer inside Frostfang Pack.
Laila’s hatred ran too deep. If she went in, she might lose control.
Frostfang Pack.
Estelle stood by the bed, staring at the young he wolf lying there, her gaze almost feverish.
“Kain, do you know what it feels like to love someone you can’t have and can’t forget? Do you know what it’s like to hate someone

you can’t truly hate and can’t let go of?”
Her voice dropped to a murmur, her expression growing more unhinged with each word.
These past two years, she had grown more restless and irritable. Beneath that agitation was emptiness.
It felt like something had been torn out of her, or like something had wrapped around her heart so tightly that she couldn’t breathe, like being trapped inside a cocoon with no way out.
She wanted to break free, but no matter how hard she struggled, she couldn’t. It was suffocating
Her wolf spirit growled in her mind. “Enough. Kain is dead. What’s the point of staring at this face?”
Estelle ignored it.
After a moment, Zane woke.
He’d been drugged, and his whole body was weak. Everything around him was unfamiliar.
He looked at the strange woman by the bed, his voice hoarse, panic flashing in his eyes. “Wh–who are you? What do you want?”
Estelle’s heart went cold.
Like a flame that had just caught, only to be doused completely in an instant.
The face was the same, but the presence, the nerve, it was nowhere close.
“You’re afraid of me?” Estelle asked slowly, disgust creeping into her voice. “Is this what’s left of the Conlays? Someone this weak?”
Weak? I’m not weak!
“Who are you?” Zane clenched his fists, thoughts racing.
A sharp edge entered his gaze. “Whoever you are, you clearly know who I am. You took me for a reason. Who are you trying to use me against? Let me tell you this. Whoever it is, you won’t succeed.”
Estelle watched as the fear faded, replaced by the stubborn pride that seemed to run in the Conlay bloodline.
She let out a quiet sigh, then smiled. “That’s more like it. That’s how a Conlay he–wolf should be.”
