Lord Castellan moved throughghunters like a ghost–there one moment, gone the next, leaving bodies in his wake. His vampire warriors fought with lethal efficiency, their supernatural speed and strength devastating against human opponents.
But the hunters kept coming. More of them. Better equipped. With tactics specifically designed to counter both wolves and vampires.
Silver bullets that exploded on impact. Flamethrowers that created walls of fire. Some kind of gas that made it hard to breathe, hard to shift.
“They’re prepared for us,” Lord Castellan observed, appearing beside me after dispatching three hunters. “This isn’t randorn. They ve studied our fighting styles.”
“How?” Emma’s voice was strained with pain and exhaustion. “How do they know so much about us?”
“The spy,” I said grimly. “Whoever’s feeding them information has been doing it for a while. Long enough for them to prepare a coordinated assault.”
A massive explosion rocked the hospital’s east wing. Fire erupted, spreading quickly.
*“Evacuate the hospital!“* my father commanded. *“All patients and medical staff to safe houses. Now!“*
We fell back, covering the evacuation. Nurses and doctors rushing patients out, wolves and vampires holding defensive positions against relentless hunter assault.
I was bleeding from multiple wounds now. Silver burns that wouldn’t heal quickly. Emma was barely standing, her post–birth exhaustion catching up to her. Even Lord Castellan looked strained, his movements slightly slower.
We were losing ground.
Then I heard it–howls in the distance. Multiple packs, all converging on our position.
*“Silverbrook Pack reporting. We’re two minutes out.”
日本
*“Moonshadow Pack engaging hunters from the west.“*
*“Ironwood Pack here. What do you need?“*
Our allies. Responding to emergency calls. Coming to help.
The tide began to turn. Fresh wolves hitting hunters from unexpected directions. The hunter assault faltered, their coordination breaking down as they faced forces from multiple packs plus vampires.
“Fall back!” one hunter commander shouted. “Mission abort! Fall back to extraction points!
They retreated in good order–professional even in defeat–but they retreated. Leaving bodies behind, both theirs and ours.
As the last hunters disappeared into the forest, I collapsed. The silver poisoning, the multiple wounds, the exhaustion—it all hit
at once.
“Jeremy!” Emma was beside me, shifted back to human form. “Jeremy, stay with me.”
“I’m okay,” I managed. “Just tired. Is Grace”
“Safe. With Dad in the safe room.” She was crying now. “You idiot. You took a silver bullet for that warrior.”
“Had to. She’s got kids.” My vision was blurring. “Emma, the spy. We need to find-
“We will. After we get you medical attention.” She looked around frantically. “We need a doctor!”
Lord Castellan appeared. “The hospital is compromised. Fire damage, structural issues. We need to move the wounded to

alternative locations.”
“The pack house,” Emma said “We can set up emergency medical there.”
I tried to stand and failed. The silver poisoning was worse than I’d thought.
“I’ve got him.” Lord Castellan lifted me with surprising gentleness. “Come. Let’s get your mate stabilized.”
As he carried me toward the pack house, I looked back at the burning hospital. At the bodies scattered across the grounds. At the evidence of hunters who’d known too much, struck too precisely.
