Chapter 112
My Cheating Mate
Emma pov
The makeshift medical room in the pack house was too quiet except for Jeremy’s labored breathing. Each breath sounded wrong
-wet, rattling, like his lungs were filling with flund,
“Silver poisoning is progressing faster than normal,” Dr. Reeves said, her voice tight with worry. “The bullet fragmented on impact. There are pieces throughout his shoulder and chest cavity. I can’t remove them all surgically without risking more damage.”
“Then what can you do?” My voice came out sharper than intended, but I didn’t care. My rate–the father of my hour–old daughter–was dying from silver poisoning while I stood here useless.
“Supportive care. Try to slow the progression. Hope his wolf healing can overcome it.” She didn’t meet my eyes. “Emma, I’m sorry. With this much silver in his system, his chances aren’t good.”
“Not good enough.” I wiped angry tears from my face. Crying wouldn’t help Jeremy. Wouldn’t save him. “There has to be something-”
“There isn’t.” Dr. Reeves’s voice cracked. “I’m sorry. I’ve done everything I can.”
I looked at Jeremy’s face- so pale, sweat beading on his forehead, his wolf unable to heal properly with silver literally poisoning him from the inside. This morning he’d held our daughter for the first time. Now he might not live to see her second day.
“No.” The word came out fierce. “No, I’m not accepting this. We didn’t survive everything we’ve been through for him to die now. Not after the affair. Not after the therapy. Not after the war and the vampires and-” My voice broke. “Not after finally being happy.”
Lord Castellan had been pacing the hallway outside, his vampire/warriors standing guard. Now he appeared in the doorway, his expression unreadable.
“The silver poisoning is killing him,” he stated. Not a question.
“Yes.” Dr. Reeves stood, blocking my view of Jeremy protectively. “And there’s nothing more we can do. The fragments are too deep, too dispersed.”
“Not nothing.” The vampire lord moved closer, studying Jeremy with clinical interest. “I could help. Again.”
My heart lurched. “You could heal him? Like you healed Alpha Richard?”
r
“Potentially. But Emma, you need to understand–healing silver poisoning is more complex than healing physical trauma. The silver actively fights against supernatural healing. It would require significant power and-“He paused. “It would create another debt.”
“I don’t care about debts.” I moved to Jeremy’s side, taking his too–cold hand. “Save him. Please. Whatever it costs.”
“Emma.” Lord Castellan’s voice was gentle but firm. “Jeremy already owes me a significant favor. If I do this–if I save his life again the debt would become substantial. Life–debt substantial. Do you understand what that means?”
“It means he’s alive to pay it.” I met the vampire’s dark eyes. “Lord Castellan, my daughter needs her father. I need my mate. The pack needs their future Alpha. Whatever debt this creates, we’ll deal with it. Just save him.”
“The debt wouldn’t just be his. It would be yours too. Both of you, bound to me by life–debt.” He moved closer to Jeremy’s bedside. “That’s significant, Emma. That’s the kind of debt that can shape destinies.”
“Then it shapes our destiny.” I was crying openly now. “Please. I’m begging you. Don’t let him die.”
Lord Castellan studied me for a long moment. Then he looked at Dr. Reeves. “Leave us. I need complete privacy for this.”
