My father placed Grace in Jeremy’s arms. She immediately stopped fussing, her tiny hand finding Jeremy’s finger.
“Hey, little one,” Jeremy whispered. “I’m sorry I scared you. Scared your mom. I’m here now. I’m not going anywhere”
Grace made a small sound, her eyes still that newborn blue that would change to amber or brown eventually focusing on Jeremy’s face.
“She knows you,” I said softly. “Knows her daddy.”
“I made so many promises to her already. To be a good father. To protect her. To give her a stable, peaceful life.” Jeremy’s voice was thick with emotion. “And here I am, first day of her life, creating life–debts to vampires and afrost dying.”
“You protected her. The hunters came for her specifically, and you stopped them.” I settled beside him on the bed. “Jeremy, you’re already being the father she needs. The father you promised to be.”
My father cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you three alone. But Jeremy–when you’re able, we need to discuss security. The spy is
still out there. And the hunters will be back.”
“I know.” Jeremy’s expression hardened. “Dad, we need a full internal investigation. Anyone with access to real–time information about the birth.
“Already started. Marcus is leading it. We’re questioning everyone, checking communication logs, looking for any anomalies.” My father paused. “We’ll find them. Whoever betrayed us- -we’ll find them.”
After he left, Jeremy, Grace, and I in silence. Our small family, barely a day old, already tested by violence and betrayal and impossible choices.
“Life–debt,” Jeremy finally said. “Emma, do you really understand what you agreed to?”
“Lord Castellan can ask anything of us. We’re bound to fulfill it or face consequences.” I took his free hand. “But Jeremy, the alternative was watching you die. That wasn’t acceptable.”
“What if he asks for something terrible? Something that puts Grace at risk?”
“Then we figure it out. Together.” I leaned my head
I on his shoulder. “We’ve survived everything else. We’ll survive this too.”
Grace yawned, her tiny face scrunching adorably. Jeremy smiled down at her, his expression a mix of love and fierce protectiveness.
“I will do everything in my power to make sure she grows up safe,” he said quietly. “No matter what debts I have to pay. No
r matter what Lord Castellan asks of us. Grace comes first.”
“We come first,” I corrected. “All three of us. Our family. That’s what we protect.”
“Our family,” he agreed.
Outside, I could hear pack members moving about–cleaning up from the battle, tending to wounded, securing the perimeter. Our pack, battered but surviving. Allied now with vampires against hunters who wanted us all dead.
Everything had changed in twenty–four hours. We’d gained a daughter. Formed a vampire alliance. Incurred life–debt. Confirmed a traitor in our midst.
But we were alive. Together. That had to count for something.
“Emma?” Jeremy’s voice was soft. “Thank you. For saving me. Even if it cost us both.”
“Always,” I whispered back. “I’ll always save you. Just like you’ve saved me, over and over.”
“We save each other.”
