“Come in,” Andrew called from inside.
Amelia let out a slow breath and pushed open the door. The office was almost too quiet. Only Andrew and his assistant were there, the harsh white light making the stacks of paperwork on the desk and conference table look even more daunting.
She barely glanced at any of it. With tiny, careful steps, she made her way to Andrew’s desk.
“Andrew, what did you want to talk about?” her voice came out a bit too soft.
Andrew didn’t even glance up from the file in his hands. “You can go,” he said, voice steady.
Amelia looked up in surprise. She caught the assistant’s silent nod before he slipped out, closing the door behind him.
Now it was just the two of them. Her heartbeat pounded so loudly she was sure Andrew must hear it. She stared at the floor, trying to steady herself. Then she glanced up. He was still reading, not acknowledging her at all.
Fine. No backing out now.
She straightened her back, bent deeply at the waist, and blurted out, “I’m sorry!”
Andrew finally looked up, eyebrows raised in confusion.
Amelia squeezed her eyes shut, words tumbling out in a rush. “Andrew, I know I messed up. Punish me if you have to. Whatever you say, I’ll do it, I promise. I’ll never, ever screw up again. I’ll take care of Dennis, I swear.”
She bowed again, even lower this time. “I’m really, really sorry!”
She stayed in that deep bow, not daring to move. Her legs started to ache, but she held the pose until finally, after what felt like forever, Andrew spoke.
“Stand up.”
Relief flooded her. She straightened instantly and met his gaze, her own eyes wide and anxious.
Andrew studied her, face serious. “Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that too.”
