Her phone vibrated in her pocket. She pulled it out and answered, “Yes… okay, I’ll be there.” She hung up and stood.
“Mum, I need to go. Please look after Danish.”
“But you haven’t eaten anything,” Olivia said.
“It’s fine, Mum. I’ll grab something on the way. I’ll get my bag.”
She turned to head upstairs, but her steps froze when she saw David standing a few meters away. His eyes were red and sharp, his jaw tight like he was forcing himself not to explode. Lily frowned. She had no idea what his problem was now. She ignored him and walked up the stairs.
He didn’t follow.
When she came back down, bag in hand, he was in the same spot in the living room. Not even an inch moved, standing like a statue.
“What’s wrong? Planning to stand here all day?” she asked as she passed him. Her voice was calm but distant.
She didn’t expect him to move. But suddenly her wrist was grabbed, hard, and she was pulled back.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” she snapped, trying to yank her hand away. His grip only tightened, and anger shot up her spine.
“David, you’re hurting me!” she shouted.
The moment he heard that, he let go instantly. He dragged his hand through his hair and looked frustrated, like he was fighting with himself.
Lily shot him a sharp glare and rubbed the red mark on her wrist. “You’re completely out of my understanding,” she muttered.
David looked at her again, and for a second his face softened so quickly she wondered if she imagined it.
“Where are you going? I’ll drop you,” he said. His voice was calm, but tight.
“Thank you, but no. You don’t need to. My ride is already here,” she said and turned away.
“Lily, I’m here now. Let me drop you,” he said, following her.
“I told you, you don’t need to,” she said, already tired of this argument.
They stepped outside together. The moment David saw the car waiting at the gate, his whole expression darkened. Jacob’s car was parked right in front of his house.
David’s temper snapped. “Lily.” He grabbed her hand again and pulled her back. “So you’re going with him? What do you take me for?”
