Chapter 5 The Man Always Loyal to Me
I tried to play it cool, but Edward caught the tremor in my voice immediately.
He asked urgently, “Ella? Your voice sounds wrecked. Are you sick? What’s going on?”

I coughed a couple times, dodging the question, and continued, “I’m fine. Can you pull Grace’s hospital records for me? The psychiatric ones.”
Edward’s fingers were already flying across the keyboard. I could hear it through the phone. His voice dropped into that low, smooth register he always used when he was working.
“For you? Always. Give me a minute.”
A minute passed. Then his voice changed out of rage.
Edward said, “Let me get this straight. Grace used some fake intermittent explosive disorder diagnoses to hurt you multiple times. Do you know that?
“Even if you didn’t want to talk to your father, why didn’t you call me? You’re from the noble Scott family, the wealthiest family in this city.”
His voice trembled slightly, dropping to a whisper.
“Was it because you figured out my feelings for you? Is that why you cut me out for six years?” he asked.
The ache in my chest spread slow and sharp when I heard his questions.
Here was the thing I never told anyone, not even Finn. My father, Luke Scott, was the richest guy in this city.
When I was sixteen, my father cheated on my mother.
When she knew Dad and his mistress were in a hotel, Mom drove to catch them off guard. However, some robbers on the highway kidnapped Mom and demanded ransom.
Dad was too busy having sex with his mistress to answer the phone.
Enraged, the kidnappers killed my mother, and her body was never found.
Dad was devastated. He never remarried and spent the rest of his life drowning in guilt.
But I couldn’t forgive him. I left home at eighteen and cut all ties with him.
So, when I met Finn in college, he always believed that I was an orphan.
Dad was too guilty to face my anger. He transferred most of the company shares into my name and made me rich, but he never talked with me about what he had done for me.

He was as experienced as if he had ordered food for me a thousand times before.
However, Finn was afraid that Edward would steal me from him. The following year, he proposed to me.

He said, “I have fallen for you since the first sight. The moment I saw you, I know you would be my everything. I want to protect and take care of you for the rest of my life.”
He didn’t care that I was a lonely girl with no background, and he promised to love only me.
Then, I recalled the four years of college spent with Finn. He would bring me breakfast every morning. He would buy me a bouquet every special day.
I was so moved that I was about to nod yes. However, I looked up and saw Edward’s face. He stood not far away and tried so hard to hide the pain in his eyes.
The way he looked at me, like he had been waiting his whole life, though we had not known each other for a long time.
It made my heart race uncontrollably.
To calm myself down, I turned to look at Finn and nodded yes to him before I could think.
And after I married Finn, I kept my distance from Edward.
