Meanwhile, Damien sat in his car, parked at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, cars speeding past him without a second glance. He was lost in thought, his eyes staring into nothing while his mind replayed only one name…Cassia.
He could remember the first time he had laid eyes on her.
The very first moment he saw Cassia, his wolf had screamed mate. It had been instant, undeniable. From that moment, he knew they were meant for each other. Yet, he hadn’t rushed her. He hadn’t pushed. He knew what she had been through, knew the weight she carried at the time, and the last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable.
So he waited.
He waited years.
Seven long years.
Seven years of standing by her side, protecting her, loving her quietly, while she healed. Seven years of waiting for her to regain her wolf. Seven years of waiting for her to finally feel the mate bond.
And when she did… it had been the happiest moment of his life.
The day she told him she could feel it…the bond…his heart had nearly burst with joy. When she finally told him she loved him, he had felt like the world was finally complete. He had proposed, and she had accepted.
And now…
Now she wanted to cancel their wedding.
The thought shattered him all over again. Pain surged violently through his chest, sharp and unforgiving, spreading straight to his wolf, which thrashed restlessly inside him, demanding release. His breathing grew uneven as his vision blurred.
He loved that woman with his life.
He couldn’t imagine a life without her…without them. He had already built a future in his mind, one that included Cassia and Arthur. A family. A home filled with warmth, laughter, and peace. He had imagined growing old with her, imagined watching Arthur grow, imagined everything.
And now it felt like it was all being ripped away.
“No,” he muttered under his breath.
He clenched his fists tightly, so tightly that his claws sliced into his palms, blood welling almost immediately. The pain grounded him, but it did nothing to ease the storm inside his chest.
Maybe Beta Greg was right.
Maybe he had pushed her too far. Maybe he had been too hard on her, too demanding when she was already drowning. Slowly, he loosened his grip, flexing his fingers as blood smeared across his skin.
But one thing was certain.
He was not giving up.
He would fight for her.
No matter what it took…sweat, blood, pain…he would fight. Cassia was his. She had always been his. And nothing, absolutely nothing, was going to take her away from him.
Nothing.
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the sharp ringing of his phone.
He froze, then reached for it quickly, his heart pounding as he glanced at the caller ID.
Arthur’s School.
His heartbeat spiked instantly.
He answered immediately.
“Am I speaking with Mr. Damien?” a female voice asked.
“Yes,” he replied quickly.
“This is Mrs. Lauretta, the principal of your son’s school,” she said. “School closed over two hours ago and no one has come to pick him up. We tried reaching his mother, but her number isn’t connecting, so we decided to call you.”
Damien cussed softly under his breath.
“I’m on my way now,” he said before ending the call.
He checked the time.
Twenty minutes past six.
