“Strange.”
But even curiosity wouldn’t make him rush into the cafeteria. He kept moving forward. When he reached the West Cafetería, he pushed the door open and called out, “I’m back-”
His eyes immediately fell on the bodies sprawled across the floor.
Ten, maybe more, twisted and broken in every direction.
His brow furrowed sharply, his gaze cutting like a blade.
At that moment, the remaining six–one boy and five girls–shivered as they emerged from the small room.
“Doug!” they called out, their voices trembling with fear.
This was Doug Jamerson, a senior in the Finance School–and also an ability user. Otherwise, he couldn’t have moved through the freezing campus in nothing but a light autumn shirt with such ease.
His face darkened. “What happened?”
The group stammered, each speaking at once. Once the story was told, Doug’s expression became utterly grim.
Katie was gone. Jess was gone too!
Damn it.
He clenched his fists, and the temperature in the room plummeted. Ice crystals formed around him, spreading outward like a cold storm.
“Doug-” the six screamed in terror.
But Doug paid them no mind. The bone–chilling cold froze them into statues, one by one. Finally, he muttered, “Useless.” He wanted Katie for himself and had designs on Jess as well–but in the university, morality still had some hold; it hadn’t collapsed like the outside world. So he had never forced them. He only expected them to come willingly, to offer themselves.
Now, with resources growing scarcer, and only he able to go out to gather food, his position could solidify beyond challenge, his authority unshakable.
In recent days, he had ventured out and seen exactly how chaotic the outside world had become.
It was time to make a change.
He wasn’t obligated to feed the others for free. If they wanted the food he brought back, a simple “thanks, Doug” wouldn’t cut it. They would have to pay the price.
And yet, before he could even enforce this, Katie and Jess had run off with someone else!
Damn it!
‘Wait!‘
He stiffened. A thought struck him: the car had to pass the East Cafeteria first. That meant the man who took Katie and Jess must have confronted Brandon.
Brandon was hot–tempered and reckless. He was obsessed with getting his hands on a car–his abilities didn’t let him leave campus to search for food. And yet Ray had driven straight through.
Doug drew a sharp breath. “Brandon is dead.”

That explained why, when passing the East Cafeteria, Brandon hadn’t attacked him for the first time
‘Should I go check? But… what if this is a trap set by Brandon and that givy to ince me in?
Doug hesitated, then decided not to act immediately. He could move freely in the freezing cold, there was no need to ide anything today. Tomorrow would do.
‘But… what if Brandon really is dead?‘ he wondered again.
His eyes lit up. If that was the case, the campus would be completely his.
