hapter 213
Theo spoke first.
When he finished, Killian followed.
With that, Ray understood the whole sequence of events. He looked at Killian and said calmly, “Walk forward.”
Walk forward?
Killian didn’t understand what he meant, but he didn’t dare disobey. He took a step forward.
And that was the end of it.
He vanished on the spot.
Theo’s eyes went wide.
Was this an ability? This was straight–up magic.
Ray smiled faintly. “Describe Logan’s ability in detail. And tell me–when did he gain it, and how did it happen?”
Theo thought for a moment. “Boss got his ability on the seventh day after the disaster. I don’t know the exact details–he never said, and we never dared to ask. All I know is that before he gained it, he nearly died.”
Hmm?
Ray felt as if he’d caught something important. “Be specific.”
Theo explained that on the fifth day after the disaster, Logan was so starving he couldn’t take it anymore and decided to risk going out to look for supplies. At the time, the toxic hail hadn’t stopped. Even though he prepared carefully before leaving, he was still struck by it.
Yet, his willpower was terrifying.
He endured the searing pain of the toxins burning through his body and somehow made it back. He lay in bed for two days and two nights, his fever spiking as high as 111 degrees Fahrenheit. A normal person would’ve had their brain and organs fried–but not only did Logan survive, he awakened an ability.
That was when they became unstoppable.
Ray fell into thought.
Ever since discovering the mutated husky, he’d known he wasn’t the only one with powers. He’d been thinking about one
question ever since.
How exactly were abilities born? Why did some people awaken them, while others didn’t?
Comparing his own experience with Logan’s, two possibilities emerged.
First: contact with the toxic hail.
He himself had been struck by it. The pain had been searing. But at the time, before he knew Michael was a fake son, all he’d thought about was protecting his child. He’d forced himself to run home through the agony.
Yes, he’d had a fever too–but not a high one. It had been a persistent low–grade fever that never broke, right up until the day he was slaughtered by the Gantt family.
Second: a brush with death.
A powerful obsession of not wanting to die. That desperate will to survive might trigger an awakening… an ability.

Was it the first condition? The second? Or did both need to be present?
The sample size was too small to be certain.
But Ray felt he was already close. Whatever the truth was, it probably wouldn’t fall far outside these boundaries.
‘I’ll have to investigate when I meet other ability users in the future,‘ he thought.
Unfortunately, he had encountered Brandon and Doug before–two ability users–but he’d never had the chance to interrogate
them.
Back then, his only thought had been to kill them.
Ability users were too dangerous. If you caught one off guard, you killed them immediately. Giving them a chance was the same as gambling with your own life.
If that was the choice, Ray would rather not know the secret behind human abilities–or learn it later–than take such a risk.
Learning later wouldn’t kill him. Giving another ability user an opening just might.
He continued questioning Theo, focusing on how powerful Logan’s ability actually was.
But Logan rarely used his power, so Theo didn’t know much.
There was one thing he could say for sure, though. Logan had never absorbed anyone else’s ability.
They’d ruled that wealthy residential district like kings and only went out occasionally to gather supplies. They’d never had the chance to encounter a second ability user.
