Chapter 76
Wesley had been under immense pressure lately, and it was only getting worse.
At the very start of the disaster, he’d spun a lie. He claimed he had a relative working in a government department, and that the state had established a shelter, allowing a very limited number of people inside to survive the catastrophe.
And he had claimed that he just happened to be holding three spots.
A handful of people actually believed him. Not only did they obey his every command and flatter him endlessly, they even handed over all their possessions.
There weren’t many fools–only nine in total, and two of them were women.
Of course he slept with them. Their looks were nothing special, but he wasn’t anyone important himself.
Free women, with no strings attached, and he could do whatever he wanted. How could he not enjoy it?
But…
As the days passed, food and clean water dwindled. The promises he’d boasted about never materialized. The nine of them were growing anxious, asking every day when the government vehicles would come to take them away.
He was running out of lies.
And once the truth came out–that he was a fraud–those nine angry, desperate people would tear him apart, bone by bone.
How chaotic was the world now? Was killing really such a strange thing anymore?
So he had to come up with something. Otherwise, he might not even survive.
He gathered the nine together.
“I just heard from my cousin,” Wesley said. “He says the fog outside is still too thick. The troops can’t move yet, so the convoy that’s supposed to take us away will need a few more days.”
He’d used this excuse several times already. The nine immediately showed their impatience.
Wesley hurried on, “Food is running out. We have to find a way to survive! My cousin said that in special times like this, you have to use special methods. I told him about what’s been happening in the complex lately, and he suggested we take Ray down.
“Ray has extremely severe antisocial tendencies. In a time like this, he poses a serious threat to society. He must be stopped.”
“My cousin also said that under these extraordinary circumstances, once we take Ray down, we’re allowed to deal with his supplies ourselves.”
At once, several people showed clear interest.
Why had they believed Wesley so easily in the first place? Because they wanted to live.

And why were they anxious now? Because they were afraid of starving, of thirst, and of freezing to death.
In the end, it all came down to the same reason. They wanted to survive.
If they took Ray down and seized his supplies… they could hold on a little longer, waiting for government
rescue.
They weren’t exactly stupid. It was just that when people were desperate, they clung to even the smallest shred of hope–no matter how vague or illusory.
And Wesley understood human nature well. He always spoke in the name of his “cousin.”
And who was that cousin? A government official.
