Sophie's desire to share gossip was at an all-time high.
Completely missing Riley's desperate look.
She grabbed her arm and bombarded her with questions. "Riley, you have to tell me how much doctors at the Mayo Clinic make. I couldn't find the numbers online anywhere."
As the number one hospital in the world, the salaries were naturally top-tier.
Riley swallowed hard and ventured, "I heard it's in the millions?"
Hearing the number, Sophie looked a bit disappointed. "That's it? That's not much higher than domestic salaries."
Riley quietly clarified the currency. "In US dollars."
Sophie instantly gasped.
After a stunned silence, she muttered, "...Then Director Sanders is actually pretty low-key. I heard he drives a GLS 450."
"It's a Mercedes-AMG GLS 63."
Victor Vance, who had just parked his car next to Sampson's spot that morning, suddenly inserted himself into the conversation.
Sophie missed a crucial word. "G63? You think I don't know what a G-Wagon looks like?"
"It's not a G-Wagon," Victor corrected, shaking his head.
He was a massive gearhead and an absolute fanatic when it came to AMG models.
He eagerly educated Sophie. "The GLS 63 might look like the 450 on the outside, but it's packing a V8 engine that pushes out a massive 612 horsepower. It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars more."
It looked the same but cost that much more?
Sophie couldn't wrap her head around it.
Victor smirked. "It has an elegant exterior but a completely wild, predatory nature under the hood. That's why this car has a nickname in the car community: The Suit Thug."
Victor chuckled. "Our new director actually has a pretty wild contrast to him."
Contrast?
The tip of Wendy's pen paused on the medical chart she was writing.
Recalling her few encounters with Sampson.
She realized Victor's description was remarkably accurate.
Three days of back-to-back surgeries followed.
Wendy was so busy her feet barely touched the ground.
It wasn't until a junior doctor came to hand over a patient's file that she realized it was already Saturday.
On the day they got their marriage license, she had promised Sampson she would go with him on Sunday to meet his parents.
Now it was Saturday evening, and she still hadn't received a single text from him.
The weather was turning cold, and surgical cases were piling up. Wendy figured their schedules simply didn't align and assumed the plan was off.
Wendy froze for a second, scanned her surroundings to ensure no one was watching, then quickly pulled the door open and climbed inside.
A faint, pleasant scent of cedar and citrus wafted through the interior.
Sampson turned his head to take in her outfit for the day.
She was wearing a beige cardigan over camel-colored slacks, with light makeup and her hair pulled into a sleek ponytail.
It was a stark contrast to her usual white coat.
Noticing his gaze lingering, Wendy asked, "Is this inappropriate?"
"You look stunning, Dr. Gates."
Not one to hold back a compliment, Sampson offered a faint smile before turning the steering wheel and merging out of the parking lot.
"I will be driving this car to pick you up from now on, so you don't have to worry about anyone seeing us."
He was following through on their agreement to keep the marriage hidden.
Wendy nodded. "Alright. Thank you."
"You don't need to thank me anymore, Dr. Gates."
Sampson caught her eye in the rearview mirror. "We are married."
The unspoken message was clear: there was no need to act like strangers.
