My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 42

The antibiotic treatment would take at least four weeks.

Having completed the thrombolysis, the current priority was the antibiotic regimen in cardiology.

To make it easier to monitor him and adjust his medication, neurosurgery contacted Wendy before her shift ended and transferred the patient to the cardiology ward.

With such a high-profile patient—and specific instructions from Director Sawyer—assigning a primary physician became a headache.

Nobody wanted to take the case.

After all, getting it right was expected, but if anything went wrong, heads would roll.

No one wanted to invite that kind of trouble.

In the end, Riley volunteered, not wanting to put Wendy in a tough spot.

"Thanks, Riley."

Riley waved it off. "Just consider it my early wedding gift to you and Dr. Sanders."

"Besides, if it were any other doctor, it might be awkward for Dr. Sanders to come by and chat with you."

Riley's true intention was to play wingman for her best friend's secret marriage.

But...

The patient had been in the ward for over a week, and Riley hadn't caught a single glimpse of Sampson.

She couldn't help but ask Wendy, "I mean, Bed 16 has been here for ages. Doesn't your Dr. Sanders even want to use this as an excuse to come see you?"

Forget using work as an excuse.

Sampson had been on second-line call all week, and the two hadn't crossed paths at all.

One was handling emergencies, the other was stuck in surgery.

They were just too busy.

Wendy shot Riley an amused look and teased, "If you have the energy to monitor that, your workload clearly isn't heavy enough."

"A heavy workload shouldn't get in the way of romance."

Riley leaned in close to Wendy's ear and whispered, "Don't say I didn't warn you, but Dr. Sawyer has been dropping by our department every single day lately."

Wendy didn't see the issue. "He's a neurosurgery patient. What's wrong with Dr. Sawyer coming over to check on him?"

Riley shot Wendy a look of sheer exasperation and sighed. "Think about it. Even if it was your patient, would you run over to another department every single day?"

Wendy asked, "Strawberry milk tea?"

Riley nodded enthusiastically.

The moment food was mentioned, she completely forgot about the gossip.

The patient was in great shape, and the antibiotics were working wonders.

As his primary physician, Riley kept Wendy updated on his progress in real-time.

"After two weeks of treatment, Bed 16's temperature and infection are under control for now. Wendy, you should go coordinate with cardiothoracic for an elective surgery when you have time."

The vegetation on his valves hadn't shrunk, meaning he met the surgical criteria.

Wendy nodded. "I'll go talk to Chief Lawrence this afternoon."

Riley nodded back, choosing not to mention that Dr. Sawyer was still making daily visits to the ward.

With her residency coming to an end, Wendy was already stressed enough with assessments and surgeries; Riley didn't want to add to her mental load.

Because of this, the next time Wendy heard Dr. Sawyer's name, she was in the operating room.
