"Did you not get my message?"
"I got it."
He gave her a pointed look, setting his book down as he stood up.
"I already ate. That food is from Winona. She had her driver drop it off to celebrate your resignation."
Guilt crashed over her for not knowing about the surprise dinner. Unwilling to waste Winona's thoughtful gesture, she picked up a bowl of soup to heat up.
"Don't force yourself if you're full. It'll keep for breakfast."
He gently caught her wrist, stopping her, and pulled a car key from his pocket.
"Here's my gift to you."
"I already registered the plates with the building. It's for you to drive when our shifts don't align."
Unlike the absurdly expensive luxury vehicles Winona had tried to push on her, this was a perfectly sensible thirty-thousand-dollar sedan that aligned flawlessly with a resident's salary.
Realizing he had specifically chosen it so she wouldn't feel overwhelmed, she accepted it without hesitation.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." He held her gaze. "Winona wants us over for Sunday dinner. She says she misses you."
She had been holding onto that vintage perfume Jade tracked down for an entire month; this was the perfect time to hand it over.
"But I can't do this weekend."
She looked at him in confusion. "Didn't your department announce the joint retreat this weekend?"
He thought about it for a second. "I think they mentioned something."
"But I haven't RSVP'd yet."
Just listen to the sheer arrogance of the man! The entire department was throwing a lavish welcome party specifically for him, and the guest of honor was casually debating whether to even show up!
She let out a dramatic sigh. "Must be nice having those sweet Director privileges."
"You really want to know?"
Oh, if he was asking for an explanation, she had endless material.
Seeing him nod enthusiastically, she unleashed her pent-up rage.
"There's a saying in the OR: residents are walking biohazards, but Attendings naturally excrete sterile fields. Your sweat is practically pure antibiotics."
"Take scrubbing in, for instance. A resident has to scour every microscopic pore until their skin bleeds. An Attending? They just wave their hands near the sink and call it a day."
"And the gowns! If a resident lifts their hands an inch too high, the scrub nurse vaporizes them. But an Attending can practically do jumping jacks while suiting up, and everyone just cheers."
"I heard Senior Directors even unlock secret, gravity-defying methods of getting dressed!"
She finished her rant, staring at him with unadulterated awe and envy.
He had never imagined the first time his gorgeous new wife looked at him with such burning intensity, it would be purely out of jealousy over his job title.
Chuckling, he rubbed his forehead in defeat. "Well, I clearly haven't ranked up high enough. I haven't unlocked those secret moves yet."
