The moment her brain fully woke up, Wendy's eyes snapped open!
She immediately realized that the fabric clutched in her hand wasn't a bedsheet at all.
It was Sampson's dress shirt!
Sampson was leaning against the headboard, his eyes closed. He was still wearing the exact same clothes from the lounge last night. It was glaringly obvious that she had held him hostage here all night.
Perhaps because he hadn't slept well, he frowned slightly after she stared at him for a few seconds and finally opened his eyes.
"Sobered up?" His voice carried the deep, raspy gravel of someone just waking up, sounding incredibly magnetic in the quiet morning air.
"...Yeah." As the memories of what she had done last night slowly trickled back, Wendy tensed up.
"About last night... I'm really sorry."
"It's fine." Sampson massaged the bridge of his nose and stood up.
Half a minute later, he walked back in with a glass of warm water and handed it to her. "Still feel sick?"
Wendy gripped the glass and shook her head. "A little better."
Sampson remained standing by the bed, making no move to leave.
A heavy wave of guilt washed over her. She took a small sip of the water and apologized again.
"I am so, so sorry about last night."
"I said it's fine." Sampson adjusted his cuffs.
He leaned over, planting both hands on the edge of the mattress, locking eyes with her. "But tell me, Dr. Gates... do you actually know your own alcohol tolerance?"
"Huh?"
Wendy felt flustered under his intense gaze and quickly looked away.
Her mind immediately flashed to a short story she'd read online: a father took his daughter out drinking until she passed out, just to teach her what her limit was.
"...Two glasses?" Wendy guessed.
Sampson looked at her, his lips curving into a barely-there smirk. "One."
She had originally planned to wash her hair on her day off.
But she had fallen straight asleep, and her hair still reeked of alcohol from the lounge.
Wendy had no choice but to use her breakfast time to take a quick shower.
When she stepped out of the bedroom.
Sampson was already dressed and waiting for her in the living room.
On the dining table sat a plate of reheated breakfast sandwiches.
They looked completely untouched.
Wendy looked at him. "You didn't eat?"
Sampson gave a slight nod. "Waiting for you."
Wendy gripped the paper bag of food a little tighter.
Sampson drove quite slowly today. As they pulled out of the complex gates, he glanced over at the passenger seat and reminded her, "If you don't eat those soon, they'll get cold."
"No rush."
"I'll eat them in the office."
"Didn't you say you have the first surgery?" Sampson asked.
Wendy still didn't move.
Sampson caught her eye in the rearview mirror. "Well, I'm hungry now. Give me one."
So she had just felt awkward eating alone. Wendy opened the paper bag.
She looked at Sampson. "I grabbed two Mushroom and Swiss, and two Savory Chicken. Which one do you want?"
Sampson glanced at her hands. "Mushroom."
"Here."
Wendy pulled out an extra wrapper, carefully separated one for him, and held it out.
And then, she immediately realized the problem.
Sampson was driving. He didn't have a free hand to take it.
