My Secret Husband Is My Cold Boss novel Chapter 9

Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery were the two departments under the most pressure during night-time emergencies.

From 1:00 AM onward, Wendy's on-call phone didn't stop ringing.

“Chief Gates, the patient in bed three started seizing in their sleep. Monitor shows v-fib.”

“Chief Gates, the ER just admitted a case of acute heart failure. They need a surgical consult.”

“Chief Gates, bed nine is hyperkalemic, and we are completely out of ICU beds.”

...

She finally limped to eight o'clock. When the day shift doctors arrived for handover, her phone finally fell silent.

Sophie, one of the nurses, came in to bring her breakfast. “Up half the night again?”

Wendy rubbed her painfully stiff neck and shook her head. “I actually managed to get four and a half hours of sleep. I got incredibly lucky.”

Surviving near-fatal levels of sleep deprivation was basically a mandatory residency requirement. It was just part of the job.

Sophie sighed. “I feel so bad for you.”

Wendy offered a tired smile and nodded at the nurse's pocket. “Your phone keeps buzzing. Aren't you going to check it?”

“Just the morning gossip group chat.”

Since her shift hadn't officially started, Sophie pulled up a chair and began chatting.

“Massive news today. Cardiac Surgery is getting a brand-new Deputy Director, and he's apparently a complete outsider.”

“An outsider?”

The mere mention of gossip instantly revived Riley.

“I didn't know the hospital director had a son.”

Riley had a perfectly good reason for the joke.

In any top-tier hospital, bringing in an external hire to co-run a major department was practically unheard of.

No hospital administration wanted to risk parachuting an outsider into a well-oiled machine.

Not only would it be nearly impossible to command respect, but it would also spark immediate outrage among the existing staff.

Outside hires were only ever brought in if a department was severely failing, or if there was a massive talent shortage among the senior staff.

Neither of those things applied to Capital Medical Center.

Their heart center was the number one ranked facility in the entire country. Thousands of people fought tooth and nail just to secure a residency spot here.

And now they were dropping a random Deputy Director into the mix?

Riley stretched her neck to look at Sophie's screen. “Does anyone in the group chat know this guy's background? He must have some insane connections.”

The chat interface was entirely flooded with people gushing over how young and incredibly handsome the new boss was.

Sophie shook her head, openly showing Riley the messages. “The girls in Cardiac Surgery say he's actually not a nepotism hire.”
