"He called Sampson 'Director'?"
The moment Kimberly asked that question, Wendy instantly realized her mother had just been to Cardiothoracic Surgery.
"Yes."
"I didn't get the chance to tell you last time."
Kimberly wasn't buying it. "There wasn't time when I came to your house, and there wasn't time when I dropped off the birthday cake last week either?"
Wendy didn't say a word, simply giving her mother a steady look.
Her silence was the answer.
"Mom, we're keeping our marriage a secret."
"So we don't want outsiders knowing about our relationship right now."
Relegated to the status of an "outsider" by her own daughter, Kimberly felt a sharp lump in her throat.
A bitter taste flooded her mouth. "But I'm your mother."
"You didn't tell me you got married, and you lied to me about your husband's status. We—"
Wendy cut her off, looking her straight in the eye. "Mom."
"If it were just you, I would have told you."
Kimberly stared at her daughter for a long time.
Wendy took a deep breath. "Mom, can this please just stay between us?"
"I'm up for a promotion to attending. Please don't cause any drama, and absolutely do not tell Willa."
"I am begging you."
It shouldn't have to come down to a daughter begging her mother.
Kimberly's grip on her handbag strap tightened until her knuckles turned white.
Before she could say anything else, Wendy's phone buzzed.
It was Dr. Franklin.
"It's time. Why aren't you in the office?"
Wendy replied, "I'm heading back right now, sir."
She hung up the call.
Wendy slipped the phone back into her white coat pocket.
"Mom, I have a Teaching Clinic today. I really don't have time."
"Then I'll ride the elevator down with you," Kimberly nodded.
The two pushed open the door to the stairwell.
Down the middle of the hallway, Dr. Franklin stood outside the office holding a hardbound folder, looking in their direction.
Kimberly's smile froze on her face.
After a long, uncomfortable pause, she nodded in agreement.
The three of them parted ways once they stepped off the elevator.
Once Kimberly was out of earshot, Dr. Franklin turned to Wendy. "What did she want?"
He knew about her complicated family background and had run into Willa a few times before.
Wendy didn't hide the truth. "My mom just found out I got married, and she's not thrilled."
Dr. Franklin shot Wendy a look of sheer bewilderment.
"With your career and Sampson's position, what exactly is there for her to be unhappy about?"
Top-tier male surgeons had always been the ultimate catch in the dating pool.
Especially one from a world-renowned hospital like Capital Medical Center.
Wendy was genuinely surprised. Was Dr. Franklin actually praising Sampson right now?
She stayed silent.
Dr. Franklin immediately interpreted her silence as sadness.
He swallowed hard and let out a sigh. "Alright, stop looking so pathetic."
His words were gruff, but his tone was uncharacteristically gentle.
