Zelda choked on her words. She opened her mouth but swallowed the rest of her scolding.
She slumped onto the edge of the bed, her face etched with worry as she muttered, "But how could you just fall? Do you not watch where you're going? Now the Sullivans are going to..."
Unable to listen to any more of it, Sienna cut her off. "Mom."
Zelda looked up at her.
Sienna grabbed her mother's hand, her voice raspy and exhausted. "Mom, this isn't the time to blame me. Think about it. If the Sullivans find out I lost the baby because of my own carelessness, how will they react?"
"We won't even have a way out!"
Zelda froze. Realizing Sienna was right, a flash of panic crossed her face.
Sienna pressed on. "Sebastian has been growing colder toward me, and he still hasn't given up on Seraphina."
"If he finds out I tripped and lost the baby on my own, he might actually be thrilled to lose the baggage. Do you think he'd still want me then?"
"And Victoria already looks down on me. She only approved of me because I was carrying her grandchild."
Zelda's face drained of color inch by inch.
Of course, she knew all of this.
While the Simmons family wasn't exactly poor, they were completely out of their league compared to the Sullivans.
She had bent over backwards to set Sienna up with Sebastian and had schemed relentlessly to ensure her daughter got pregnant.
If all of that effort went down the drain because of an accident...
Zelda didn't even dare to imagine it.
