Seraphina froze for a split second before turning around to see Melody Monroe standing just a few feet away.
Melody was wearing a cream-colored tailored vintage dress, a delicate pearl brooch pinned to her collar. Her long hair was swept into an elegant updo, exposing her slender, pale neck, radiating an aura of dignified old money.
She was walking toward them with a perfectly practiced, poised smile.
*What the hell,* Tiffany cursed internally.
Why did they keep running into this nightmare of a woman?
Tiffany was intimately aware of the toxic history between Melody and Seraphina.
The core of the issue was painfully simple: Melody was obsessed with Lucian.
"Ms. Monroe," Seraphina greeted with a polite nod. "It is quite a coincidence."
Melody stepped closer, her sharp gaze lingering on Seraphina's heavily pregnant belly for a fraction of a second before her smile widened. "You look like you're about to pop any day now. But where is Lucian? It's awfully inconsiderate of him to just leave you standing out here all by yourself, don't you think?"
Seraphina immediately picked up on the passive-aggressive jab, but she simply maintained her serene smile. "He just stepped away to greet some business associates. He'll be right back."
Standing beside her, Tiffany mentally rolled her eyes.
Melody was as insufferable as ever, throwing out perfectly veiled insults disguised as concern.
*Awfully inconsiderate?*
The entire elite circle of the city knew that Lucian treated Seraphina like royalty.
Melody was just playing dumb to try and stir up drama.
"Are you here to celebrate Elder Harrison's birthday as well?" Seraphina asked, seamlessly changing the subject with a cool, even tone.
"Of course. Elder Harrison and my father go way back. The Monroes and the Harrisons are practically family."
Melody paused dramatically, adding, "Which makes me wonder... how did you end up on the guest list? Did Lucian get an invitation, and you just tagged along?"
Her tone dripped with condescension, heavily implying that Seraphina had crashed the party.
Before Seraphina could even open her mouth, Tiffany fired back. "Sera actually saved Elder Harrison's life a few weeks ago. Gillian personally tracked her down and invited her to show their gratitude."
Melody's meticulously groomed eyebrows twitched, a flash of genuine surprise cracking her composed facade.
