Lucian offered a sincere apology over the phone. "I'm sorry, Evie. Seraphina is quite ill, and I couldn't step away right now, so..."
"Lucian!"
Evie's voice spiked in pitch. "She might be your wife, but I'm still your sister! I'm sick too, and you didn't even bother to come back to check on me."
"Do you not even consider me family anymore?"
Evie had shouted with such force that a violent fit of coughing overtook her immediately after.
"Cough, cough, cough..."
"Evie, are you okay?" Melody rubbed her back with exaggerated concern, deliberately speaking loud enough for Lucian to hear on the other end of the line.
"Is Evie alright?"
Right on cue, Lucian's tense voice filtered through the speaker.
Watching Evie cough until her face turned pale, Eleanor considered telling Lucian to drop by, even if just for a quick glance.
In the past, whenever Evie fell ill, Lucian would fly back from halfway across the world. Wasn't that true?
"Waaah..."
Suddenly, the unmistakable cry of a baby echoed through the phone, followed by Susan's distressed voice. "Sir, I don't know what's wrong with Little Bean. He won't eat his cereal, and his crying is breaking my heart."
Lucian muttered something in response, the background noise on his end dissolving into chaos.
The moment Eleanor heard Little Bean crying, her heart leaped into her throat. "Little Bean is crying? Why is he crying? Is he sick too?"
"Lucian, Lucian, are you there?"
A moment later, Lucian's voice came back through the receiver.
"Grandma, he's fine. He just woke up and got scared because he couldn't find his mom."
"Susan said he saw Seraphina faint earlier, so he must be terrified."
So that was it.
Eleanor made a swift decision. "You are a husband and a father now. Take care of your own family first. I will handle Evie."
"Grandma!" Evie protested under her breath.
