*She's just scared,* Seraphina replied silently to her son.
*If she's scared, she should go to her family, not that fake woman,* Little Bean huffed.
Seraphina couldn't argue with that logic.
Lucian kept his eyes trained on the top of the stairs, his expression grim.
"Jasper, post someone outside her door. Don't let her leave the house alone."
Jasper nodded sharply. "Right away, sir."
At those words, Melody’s eye twitched almost imperceptibly.
Simultaneously, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She discretely checked it. A single word glowed on the screen: *"Steady."*
She memorized the text and deleted it instantly.
When she looked up, her face was once again the picture of anxious devotion. "Grandma Eleanor, maybe I should go check on her? She's clearly distressed; someone needs to be with her."
"No need," Eleanor replied firmly. "She doesn't want to see anyone."
Melody bit her lip nervously. "But I'm afraid she might do something foolish."
"She won't," Lucian stated, his voice a block of ice.
Melody froze.
Lucian pinned her with a heavy look. "You don't need to assume the worst of her."
The color drained from Melody’s face. "Lucian, I was only worried about her."
Seraphina picked Little Bean up and seamlessly cut in, "Even concern needs boundaries. When it's overbearing, it just suffocates people."
Melody snapped her gaze to her.
Seraphina met her glare head-on, completely unfazed.
Melody tightened her jaw. "Ms. Simmons, do you have some sort of misunderstanding about me?"
"No."
Melody choked.
No misunderstanding.
It meant Seraphina just straight-up despised her.
Eleanor took a slow sip of her tea. "Enough. The meal is over anyway. Seraphina needs to get the baby home to rest. There's no point in lingering here."
Lucian nodded. "We'll head back, Grandma."
Eleanor turned to Seraphina, her tone softening. "Drive safe. Text me when you get home."
