Seraphina couldn't even be bothered to look at Evie, her focus entirely locked on the heavy, chained door.
Without the key, they were completely trapped.
Thick, toxic smoke was steadily creeping up the stairwell. Either way, they were looking at a dead end.
"This is all your fault. You just had to drag me all the way up here, or else..."
Evie was still crying and complaining relentlessly.
Suddenly, frantic footsteps echoed from the flight of stairs below.
Everyone froze, turning their gazes downward into the smoke.
A moment later, a disheveled, soot-covered Melody burst into view.
Spotting Evie, Melody paused for a fraction of a second before slapping on a look of utter relief and lunging forward. "Evie! Thank god! You're safe..."
Evie shot her a look of pure ice and actively stepped back, dodging the embrace.
Melody froze awkwardly in mid-air.
It was the very first time Evie had ever displayed such blatant hostility toward her.
No, this couldn't happen. She absolutely could not lose control of such a perfectly manipulatable pawn.
Forcing a stiff, overly-sweet smile, she reached for Evie's hand again. "Evie, what's wrong? Are you hurt somewhere?"
"Don't touch me."
Evie swatted Melody's hand away with a vicious slap. "Drop the fake concern. When I fell and screamed for you, you didn't even look back. If it weren't for... Seraphina and her friend, I'd be a corpse right now."
Evie averted her gaze, her demeanor turning freezing cold.
Melody stood off to the side, her rejected hand dropping limply to her side.
She pressed her lips tightly together, staring at Evie, completely at a loss for words.
Suddenly, Seraphina's phone vibrated to life.
She pulled it out and saw Lucian's name flashing on the screen.
The suffocating dread in her chest eased slightly as she swiftly answered. "Lucian."
At the sound of his name, both Evie and Melody whipped their heads toward Seraphina simultaneously.
