The seconds ticked by ruthlessly.
Trapped in the suffocatingly tight space of the top floor landing, the air was rapidly thinning, making every breath a grueling battle.
"*Cough, cough*... How much longer? I can't take this anymore," someone wheezed.
"Evie, are you alright? Evie!" Seeing Evie swaying dangerously on her feet, Melody immediately shrieked in exaggerated panic.
Evie was clutching her chest, violently gasping for air like a fish out of water.
Tiffany scoffed. "Please. Who knows if she's faking it again? She definitely overplayed her hand last time."
But Evie was genuinely suffocating this time, gripping her chest so hard she couldn't even form a coherent sentence.
Seraphina marched over, shooting Melody a predatory, ice-cold glare. "Get out of the way."
Melody stiffened. "Evie is my friend..."
"What a blessing it is for her to have a friend like you," Seraphina sneered mockingly.
Melody's face contorted in humiliation, but before she could formulate a comeback, Seraphina ruthlessly shoved her aside.
Seraphina knelt down, pulling Evie into her arms. She gently rubbed the girl's back, murmuring soft, rhythmic words of comfort directly into her ear.
Slowly, Evie's erratic, panicked gasps began to steady.
She melted into Seraphina's embrace, completely docile and as quiet as a newborn.
Melody stood paralyzed in sheer disbelief, staring at the sight of Evie willingly seeking comfort from her worst enemy.
It was the first time she had ever seen Evie look so peaceful, like a feral cat that had finally been tamed.
Suddenly, a deafening *BOOM* ripped through the floors below, followed instantly by a terrifying wave of scorching heat.
Caught completely off guard, the group was blasted onto the concrete, screaming in sheer agony.
Melody was nearly blown right back down the stairwell.
Trembling with terror, she looked over at Seraphina and Evie. Evie had completely broken down, bawling hysterically as violent tremors racked her body.
