Tiffany Taylor had already helped Seraphina Simmons up from the ground.
Her eyes red, Tiffany looked her over. "Sera, are you okay? Does anything hurt?"
Seraphina's ears were still ringing. Tiffany's voice sounded muffled, as if she were speaking through a thick wall of water, making it hard to hear clearly.
"I... I'm fine," Seraphina managed to reply.
Hearing that Seraphina was okay, the tears that had been welling in Tiffany's eyes finally spilled over.
"Thank God."
Tiffany threw her arms around Seraphina, hugging her tightly.
Evie Langford walked over, her emotions complicated as she watched the two women hold each other.
She had always thought she and Melody Monroe shared a strong bond, but at the critical moment, Melody had abandoned her without a second thought for her life.
Seraphina and Tiffany were entirely different. They were willing to face death together.
Evie glanced at the matching bracelets on Seraphina and Tiffany's wrists, a knot forming in her chest.
Seraphina gently pushed Tiffany back. "Let's go. It's still not safe here."
"Yeah, yeah, I know! Why are you yelling so loud? I'm going deaf!"
It was meant to be a touching moment, but Tiffany's sudden outburst made it almost comical.
Evie remained silent, standing to the side. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy at their easy, unfiltered camaraderie.
Soon, everyone began boarding the rescue helicopters.
Melody finally got her wish. No one fought her for a spot, and she was the very first to board.
The rest of the survivors followed suit, boarding in an orderly fashion.
Lucian Langford stayed close to the landing zone, his eyes locked on every person stepping off the arriving helicopters.
Not there. Still not there.
His hands clenched into tight fists, his nails digging into his palms.
Another massive explosion echoed from the building, the deafening roar shaking the ground.
