Lucian looked at Evie, his lips pressed into a tight line before he gave a small nod. "As long as you're safe."
Evie wanted to say more, but she quickly realized Lucian's gaze had already shifted past her, looking at someone behind her.
She bit her lip.
Christian sensed trouble. Was Ms. Langford about to throw a tantrum at a time like this?
To his utter shock, Evie merely parted her lips before quietly stepping aside of her own accord.
Christian froze. He stared at Evie, completely unable to believe his own eyes.
Had Evie been replaced by a completely different person?
The moment Evie moved out of the way, Lucian spotted Seraphina standing a short distance away.
Their eyes met, and from that second, they couldn't look away from each other.
Seraphina broke into a run toward him, and Lucian simultaneously powered his wheelchair forward to meet her.
They stopped with less than a few inches between them.
Lucian frowned, clearly dissatisfied with the tiny gap left between them. "Come here."
Seraphina didn't move.
Suddenly, Lucian gripped the armrests of his wheelchair and pushed himself up.
Under Seraphina's stunned gaze, he took agonizingly slow, unsteady steps toward her.
Snapping out of her daze, Seraphina saw his legs give out, looking as if he were about to collapse.
She lunged forward, catching him in a desperate embrace.
Lucian immediately wrapped his arms tightly around her. He didn't say a word, simply resting his head against her shoulder and pulling her closer until they were pressed flush against each other.
"Don't ever scare me like that again."
After a long moment, Lucian pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes, his voice deadly serious.
Seraphina's eyes were red, tears welling up as she pressed her lips together and nodded.
"I won't."
Behind them, Tiffany turned her head away, secretly wiping her tears.
Standing a few steps back, Evie watched Lucian and Seraphina hold each other. For the first time, she didn't feel a surge of irrational rage. Instead, she felt a strange warmth prickling at her eyes.
