Seraphina bit her lip and shook her head. "I was okay."
"Mhm."
He gently guided her head to rest against his shoulder, speaking softly into her hair. "Evie's attitude toward you has completely changed this time. You've been through a lot."
Seraphina shifted slightly, lifting her head to look at Lucian.
Just as she opened her mouth to speak, he let out a heavy sigh and murmured, "I'm sorry."
Seraphina froze. She moistened her lips, staring up at him. "Why are you apologizing to me?"
His voice carried a heavy, muffled weight. "When you were in danger, I wasn't by your side. I left you to face everything completely alone. I'm so sorry..."
Seraphina shook her head firmly. "It wasn't on purpose. You don't need to apologize."
She kept her eyes locked on him as she spoke.
As she tilted her head up slightly, she accidentally brushed against his chin.
Seraphina frowned. Just an inch away...
Lucian's body went completely rigid. He lowered his gaze, staring intensely at her.
His burning gaze dropped directly to her red lips.
Her heart slammed erratically against her ribs under the sheer weight of his stare. Instinctively, she licked the corner of her mouth.
Lucian's pupils dilated. He caught her chin in his hand and captured her lips.
"Mmph..."
At the sound of her soft gasp, the last thread of Lucian's restraint snapped. All rational thought evaporated. He deepened the kiss with a ravenous urgency, desperate to steal the very breath from her lungs.
It felt like an eternity before he finally pulled away.
Seraphina collapsed against his chest, panting heavily, her face flushed a vibrant crimson.
She rested a hand over his heart, her fingers idly toying with one of his buttons.
Lucian stared down at her lips. His eyes were dark and fathomless, like twin whirlpools threatening to pull her under completely.
"Sera," he swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a gravelly, low register.
She gazed up at him, utterly spellbound, her own eyes misted and unfocused. "Yeah?"
