Relief washed over Lucien when he realized Emma wasn’t with Calum. Casually, he stated, “Marshal, let’s revisit our unfinished business. You promised me a fleet, remember? I’m running low. How about you send over A–16, G–179, and H–234?”
Calum snorted. “Heh. Did you wake up stupid today? How about I throw myself in as well- interested?”
If Emma hadn’t been present, Calum would’ve unleashed a string of curses by now.
He thought, One fleet. That was the deal. Lucien must be out of his mind to demand three like it’s nothing.
“That’s unnecessary, Marshal?” Lucien replied calmly. “Why would I want you? I want fleets. You promised.”
If that promise hadn’t existed, Lucien wouldn’t have dared make this call.
Calum’s jaw tightened. “Did morning sickness shake your brain loose? I said one fleet. You’re asking for three. That’s some appetite–aren’t you afraid you’ll choke?”
Three fleets, just like that. Lucien said it aloud, but even he was surprised by his boldness.
“You never said how many,” Lucien countered smoothly. “If three’s too much, then two should be manageable, right?”
Now that the words were out, there was no retreat. If Silas snagged more, Lucien would be left in the dust.
He paused, then pressed on. “Marshal, think back to when you were stationed at Beast God Mountain. Who kept your seat intact? When you returned, who backed you without hesitation? And who helped you plan things–who gave you advice on how to make Emma happy?”
He let the words settle, then added, “I’m only asking for two fleets. Not even top–tier ones. That’s hardly excessive.”
Too late–Calum hadn’t managed to end the call in time.
Emma had already reached over and taken his lightcore. Smiling, she asked gently, “Oh? Then tell me, what ideas did you give Calum to make me happy?”
Silence swallowed the line.

Back in the observation lounge, Lucien’s heart plummeted when he heard Emma’s voice.
He never thought Calum would throw him under the bus so easily.
“Lucien?” Emma’s voice came again, sweet and teasing. “What’s wrong? I’m waiting. What clever ideas did you give him?”
“Ahem… uh… Emma…” Lucien fumbled, guilt thick in his voice. “The signal’s acting up on my end. You’re breaking up…”
“Is that so?” Emma glanced at the full signal bars as she sat beside Calum, her smile deepening. “No problem. Come over, then. Tell me face–to–face what ideas you gave him to make me happy.”
Then, she cut the call.
Silas stared at Lucien, at a rare loss for words.
Now it made sense. Political therians never kept their hands clean. To keep his fleet, Lucien had risked everything on a hunch that Emma was close enough to hear.
Emma wouldn’t dig deeper; she’d assume Lucien was simply bargaining for fleets. Yet, Calum would know exactly who those fleets were really meant for.
Silas sighed. “Emma’s from Earth, and Corvin was the one who pulled her into our chat group. She doesn’t want that getting out, so act like you don’t know.”
Lucien had already suspected the first part; hearing it confirmed didn’t surprise him.
The second part, on the other hand, made him want to wring Corvin’s neck.
After that, Silas and Lucien returned to the living room. The space was quiet–only Calum remained, seated on the couch.
Lucien slowed to a stop. “Where’s Emma?”
Calum gestured toward Lucien’s room. “She’s waiting for you. In your room.”
Lucien didn’t hesitate. “Then I’ll go first.”
He left, leaving Silas alone with Calum.
Calum looked up, calm but appraising. “What do you want fleets for?” he asked. Give me one good reason.”
Silas held his stare, unbothered. “Marshal, don’t you already know?”

“I don’t.” The corner of Calum’s mouth curved slightly. “You’re a commander. Asking for the three main fleets? That sounds like you’re reaching for my seat.”
The words hung heavy in the air. One misstep, and disaster would strike.
“It’s not that dramatic,” Silas responded calmly. He leaned back in the chair opposite and smiled faintly. “I just need to deal with a few beasts that won’t listen.”
Besides, he hadn’t even asked for three.
