“Ms. Tibarn, don’t be shy.” Kieran watched Emma’s reaction and smiled as he pulled her into his arms. His long fingers landed gently on her chest. “We’re bonded now. As my mate, it’s my job to take care of you like this.”

“Bonded?” Emma’s eyes widened in shock as she glanced down. Besides Silas and the others‘ beast marks, a small pink merfolk mark was pressed quietly against her skin.

“You merfolk have this kind of special bond ritual, too?” She didn’t pull away or seem upset. It was just that bonding so quickly and easily caught her off guard.

“How is this possible?” she whispered, staring at him in shock.

Kieran looked a little sorry. “You were supposed to hit Rank 11, but those two little cubs absorbed some of the energy, so you maxed out at Rank 10.”

“Two little cubs?” Emma zeroed in. “You mean the two cubs I’m carrying inside me?”

Kieran nodded, “You were definitely carrying two cubs, but they’re not in your belly anymore.” He stood and walked over to where he had been, picking up a tiny nest made from some kind of grass. He brought it over to her. “They absorbed too much of my abilities‘ energy, so they came out early.”

Upon seeing her worried look, he hurried to reassure her. “Don’t worry. They absorbed enough energy to be completely healthy. We’re just waiting for Lucien to hatch them.”

Emma stared at the tiny nest. Inside were two fiery red eggs, about the size of chicken eggs. “These are the cubs I gave birth to?”

Kieran nodded seriously. “Exactly.” He placed the cubs in her arms and met her gaze. “I’m sorry, Ms. Tibarn.
